Working On Solar And LED Lighting In My Tiny Home O26
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Testing out the new LED lights. Wiring up my solar panels and charge controller. Wiring up LED strip lights for indirect lighting and more. When I went inside my tiny house to see if the lights work or not, they were already on. The switch was in the on position. The lights work! This was an exciting moment for the tiny house on wheels. I ran the wires for the solar charge controller through the wall and connected it to the harbor freight charge controller. Then I went outside and connected the clamps to the batteries. Next I ran the wires for the solar panels into the tiny cottage and then connected them to the solar panel connections on the charge controller. Then I went outside and connected the solar panels to the wire and I had a charging set of batteries. My tiny house was running on solar. This is a temporary setup though. I want to build a insulated battery box on the back of the tiny house and put my golf cart batteries back there. The batteries I am now using for my tiny home will be put in the RV so I have power out there when I need it. I cleaned out the entire living room of my tiny home. I moved out all of the furniture. Then I disassembled the temporary solar power setup that was on the floor of my tiny house living room. This was the portable solar power system from my bugout survival truck. It was very much in the way all this time but it did provide me with lights and some power while I worked in the tiny house on wheels. I started putting in indirect lighting in the tiny house living room. I ran some of my homemade paneling up near the ceiling of the living room and then measured and cut some of my LED strip lights to size. The solar battery bank was low when I tried to solder so I unplugged the soldering iron and left it for the next day. I have been getting eggs for about three days now. I have not been looking every day but I just found three eggs in the chicken tractor. I dont know which hen is laying but it sure is a good thing finally. Are those romex wires

Ate those romex wires

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR LED LIGHTS?
-
Good job, troy
-
This an amazing project! Great job may YHWH continue to bless you with this.
-
Troy can you give me information on the led spotlights. I would like to try some
-
did you try to run the inverter plugged into the harbor freight charge controller? when it has those tiny little wires coming from the batteries? remember thick wires for heavy loads that is also why the charge controller showed low volts when you turned the inverter on with the soldering iron. the voltage drooped though the wires

JUST A THOUGHT TROY:
IF THE STRING OF BATTERIES TAKE UP SO MUCH ROOM IN 1 PLACE:
WHY NOT BATTERIES THAT TAKE CARE OF THE KITCHEN AND BATHROOM, SOME FOR THE LIVING-ROOM, AND SOME FOR THE UP STAIRS ON THE ONE SIDE & SOME ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LOFT... THAT WAY THEY TAKE UP LESS SPACE AND IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO 1 SET OF LIGHTS YOU KNOW WHICH SETS OF BATTERIES TO CHECK???
THAT WAY YOU DONT HAVE TO HAVE A BIG SPACE TO PUT ALL THE BATTERIES
BLESSINGS

I'm excited for you and Baby Cat. You'll be in your nice new home any time now.

assuming the harbor freight stuff is temporary.
whats your ultimate goal as far as oanels, charge controller, inverter, etc...
simimular to the rv???
had a thought....
for general "light" outside? is the led strip roll weather resistant??
could it be run along the roof edge? around the perimiter of the front & partially the sides?? as sort of just light so its not pitch blackout outside?
or maybe a separate solar panel & battery setup on a particular tree??? ((( but wait; there's the issue of batteries NOT handlin cold weather...grrrr )))
that will automatically comeone @ sunset & off at sunrise that can flood your entry area??? for security????
and of course you'd have your video surveillance going.... more solar power!!! -
I've heard/read the same thing about the HF solar panels. IMHO, their major disadvantage is their size to wattage ratio. especially for higher wattage applications.
-
What happened to your large charge controller and large solar panels?
Did you sell them? -
looking good Troy!,
did you remember to only use LED ligts witch are indented for 15 volts?
lots off those led lights wil burn out over 12 volts, keep in mind that your 12 volt instalation wil be 14,5 at max charge and 15 on equalize, looking like a home now! -
Hi Troy
Good job BUT no fuses in wiring !
Here is a doge I use with low voltage wiring.
2 x ¼ inch Spade crimps ( Female )
& Blade Type Fuse . -
Hey Troy looks sharp on the lights try to put super glue in the nail holes it will adhere to the nails
-
Yay Troy!!! I have that exact solar panel/charge controller set from HF, and I can attest to it being extremely awesome. I was afraid it was going to be a toy, but it provides enough power to do quite a bit. Right now I have it set up for use in my bug out trailer, currently hooked to a couple of gel cells and running just some LED lights and a USB powered fan, but eventually it will feed a couple of marine deep cycle batteries.
Do not be discouraged about the soldering iron...they draw a LOT of juice - 45 watts typical for that size. I would not try to use that one on a battery system. Antec makes a 15 watt model that should work and is adequate for soldering smaller gauge wire such at the LEDs. Bonus, it comes with changeable tips.for different applications and is the size of a fountain pen. A more expensive solution that will do high temperature soldering is a butane fueled soldering iron. The one I have has changeable tips, including a mini flame thrower and a heat gun. :D I feel like such a nerd now. Oh, I am one... -
Good job troy You came a long way..
-
I would avoid the Harbor freight charge controller. It has always failed you in the past, and will fail you in the future!
-
cold blue white LED's? I tried that in my house and they were nasty, I eventually changed them out for warm white. Much Better!

I'm sure you already know how to do this, but ill tell you anyways. To make the camera not adjust to the lighting levels, you can turn off automatic exposure in the settings. However, you will only want to do this in times that you WANT to see the difference in lighting, because you will have to manually adjust the exposure for every different scene and level of lighting with auto exposure off. Just wanted to let you know. hope you understand what i am saying and find it useful. =)
