Illogical thinking... I see that everywhere. I call them Social Justice Warriors but there's other names.
-
This conversation is retarded. People who have historically questioned the understanding of the group were killed. It wasn't until the group, itself, started questioning the claim that the historic majority decided was fact, was the "intellectual" given any social acceptance after providing ample evidence.
"Math" and "being smart" are inherent risks. They will never be the socially acceptable, best chance for survival is having broad shoulders, a violent temper, and a big dick.
Doubt me? Show me the porns explaining Planck's constant. Then shut up cuckfag, raise my kids. -
i sucked at math but i was beating adults at chess as a kid....i could've been a chess prodigy but i stopped playing and i lost the gift...now as a adult i suck at chess and math lol

Maths is an amazing subject but I am incredibly bad at it. I am not proud of it, ofcourse. The reasons are the teachers and the education system.
-
They seem to equate illogical and anti-logical as the same. Maybe humans aren't wired for math and instead abstract thinking.
-
I am sure neil discover that question.. and Richard is not the guy who can answer this question correctly...... absurd
-
This did not fucking help! :(
-
Because most instructors are shit. At least those I've had.
-
Really understanding maths is not that hard, but forgetting it is not hard either, you just need to practice regularly and you are fine

You can't blame teachers for the nationwide hate towards Math. We don't see that trend in other topics such as English literature, History, Psychology, heck even Biology. From my few years of tutoring HS/college Math/Physics, I believe there're 2 underlying reasons: procrastination and memorization (basically studying habits). Math is foundational whereas every concepts build upon previous concept. In America, students generally are not caught up in classes, and most of their learning only comes a few days before the test. However, unlike other subjects, I believe Math cannot be learned all crammed together like that(maybe you can but you will definitely forget everything after the test). I think Math NEEDS time to be absorbed because it's not all just facts to be memorized. Second point, because of cramming, students do not really have time to think when they study, and so they just focus on memorizing patterns and methods of solving. Again Math cannot be memorized because every problem can be different and if you change it up a bit, students will have no idea what to do. Lastly, there's also a reinforced belief that Math is useless in real life. This belief cause students to view Math as something they have to pass, and this mentality can greatly hinder any real learning. And because they don't learn, they become bad at Math, which reinforces their belief. But if they are good at Math, this hatred will go away and they would not mind doing Math(I view programming and writing the same way most high school students view Math). Ok maybe you will never need to know how to solve a polynomial in real life, but in the same token when will knowing "Lincoln was shot in 1865" become useful in your daily life? So if you continue to view Math as something you have to pass rather than a challenge to see how you overcome difficulties, you will never ever become good.
-
The answer is easy. Bad instructors. You can be good at math, but that doesn't make you a good teacher.
-
I tried really hard so hard to be good at math but I just forget a lot of things about it that eventually drag me down like Math saying hell no I'm not for you go look for another one.
-
why is mathematics equal to logical thinking though. I've seen some mathematically smart people who are not so logical in real life situations.
-
Who the hell is proud to be bad at math? What the hell, Dawkins? lol When we laugh after saying that we're bad at math, we laugh at ourselves, we're not proud of it. It's like saying "I'm such a fatass" and then laughing, we're not proud of it, we just laugh at ourselves.

Most of his examples fall flat for Americans: Virgil, Dryden...they would not joke about them b/c they have never heard of them!
-
i am a maths teacher, i have no problem in mathematics, i like maths very much haa..
-
yay 1310th dislike
-
most people I know (including my mother and sister) try to just remember maths, not understand them.
I feel like Galileo while explaining why we should understand the subject.
Their idea of learning things is to just remember them.
it's like trying to explain the colours to a blind guy. -
im taking differential equations guys

Dawkins makes a statement about logic being key to survival back when we were still wild animals; humans don't survive anymore, we dominate our environment and most people just don't need those skills anymore.
