I never thought I'd say this but Dr. Kaku is wrong on government and it's role in technological advancement. The 1960's saw a windfall of new technologies thanks to the collaboration between government and private industry. The military has always been a tremendous source for development, as well.
Private industry has but one goal... to make profit. That means that big pharma will focus on penis pills and pain medication instead of finding actual cures for diseases. Once a disease has been eradicated they cannot make money on it anymore. They would consider that a "lost market" of sorts.
Fusion energy will never become a reality as long as fossil fuel companies behave in a protectionist manner. Why would they reinvent the wheel when it's already made them a fortune? In this case, they have a massive economic intensive NOT to pursue advanced energy technologies. So we will stagnate until the oil/gas runs out or we're all swimming in a make-shift water-world.
Now, in fairness, Dr. Kaku probably has someone like Elon Musk in mind. However Musk should be considered an extreme outlier. The way he gambles with his fortune to disrupt well established industries is definitely NOT in line with the overwhelming majority of capitalists in the world. Most wealthy capitalists would rather play it safe and invest in traditional markets, rather than blaze new and potentially dangerous paths into the future. -

I don't understand why people who are genius in some field, think they know about all the other fields combined, even if you are Stephen Hawkins, you must study some politics, or sociology if you want to speak about the problems of society, is not enough knowing about physics to understand everything else...
This guy should read some of the experts that are saying that the wars for food (land) and energy are going to shape the rest of the 21st century, history is not a one way street, like a mathematical function, it goes forward, backward, up and down.
You have to know about it to give lectures about it, i don't go around giving lectures of physics because i have a phd in history...this guy is doing exactly that, only the other way... -
Food is not becoming cheaper, it's becoming more and more expensive, all the political and social problems of the XXI century rely on this issue, this guy might know about science but knows nothing about the situation of the food markets and the problems of the ownership of land in the world today.

This is interesting. Apparently Michio learned free market theory. That's fucking awesome! I always thought he was a government fascist, like most scientists; for one reason, they get hooked on funding. But in economic theory, you get maximum incentive with an open economy; Government regulation creates deadweight. People NEED to be responsible for their own demand; that requires strong education tho.

The greatest invention of the 20 century was refrigeration. The ability to store food for long periods of time was one of the main driving forces of intellectual advancement.The computer is really no more than a fancy way of communicating with morse code. The internet is no more than morse code sent through a telephone wire. The people that control the food control the people. People have to eat every day no matter how smart they get. Concessions and alcohol and cigarettes is where the money is at in business. Regulations is made by business people. Who do you think puts the politicians in office. Some cities gov is owned by developers durn high construction times . Some cities are owned by big business like car sellers make money off sale taxes. The ability to make and store food for long period of time is the main driving force of intellectual societies.
