Should the patina be left intact when cleaning a vintage scope?

Watching these video series brings to mind a book by Leslie Peltier ,one of the most famous amateur astronomers here state side, who started off with draw tube telescope, called in the book " the strawberry spyglass" . He went on to join the AAVSO using this same telescope. It probably was a newer type than shown here as he noted in the book I had more than one eye piece.
The book by the way is called " Star light nights"
I reread it when ever I start thinking I need a bigger telescope, lol. -
BRILLIANT a shame there aren't any more subscribers because I cant find any video on YouTube even remotely close to this one, great job.

These videos are fascinating.Patrick O'Brian mentions a "come up" telescope in the Aubrey - Maturin novels. While the Wiki page gives a reasonable explanation about how this telescope works, I was wondering it you had an example of this type of scope?
I'm looking forward to your bino series. -
Many thanks Robert, most informative.
