COLD / VACUUM WELDING - Can metals fuse together in space, well In theory, yes – it’s an effect called ‘cold welding by which the metallic bonds that hold atoms together in each object, effectively bridge the gap between them to create a single solid object. Great video! One thing - the 'cold' in cold welding refers to the process, not the temperature involved. When you put metal under a great deal of pressure, it gets HOT. I can tell you that from personal experience. A good blacksmith can hammer a thin piece of metal until it starts to glow red without putting it in a fire. I can't do this yet, but I have made it hot enough to burn paper.
I think the metal in the video being pressed together is probably aluminum. It doesn't move like steel, and the color is more silvery. Aluminum melts at temperatures that do not produce a glowing color, so there's no visual cue like there would be with steel. -
