In this I compare the Unicomp to its IBM ancestors and divulge some of the history of the boards, and of Unicomp in general. Hope you enjoy the video! The practice sentence was: "Hello my name is Thomas and I'm typing on a Unicomp Model M right now. Not quite as heavy or quite as crisp as the Model Ms of old, this thing nonetheless holds up very well for a keyboard."

Recently got a 122 from Unicomp and it seems like the keycaps are back to the 2-part design in case anyone was wondering.

Honestly, I could listen to your voice for hours.

really enjoy your reviews. Do you know if there is any TKL keyboard with buckling springs on the market?
-
You have such a nice voice!

7:44 I think that is just for the model that you have because I've looked at other reviews (one from just the other day ago) and they had two-part keycaps.

I have to wonder if the 85 model m feeling different isnt in part because of the older more well worn springs too.
Model f had one part keycaps too, I know I'm using one, I wonder why ibm changed for the model m.
oh well i still love unicomp and ibm keyboards the best. -
Bought one of these a few years back. Space bar stopped working a few months after buying. Spoke to their tech support via email and when it became apparent it was a real fault they simply stopped responding to me, bad show

incredible vid

I think I have one of those prototype Model M keyboards you spoke about - according to the sticker on the bottom, 20-02-1986 - it has no badge and does not contain the led light panel at all.

My god, your voice is one of the most amazing things I've ever heard.

I had planned on getting a Unicomp a couple of months ago, but /r/mechanicalkeyboards talked me into getting a vintage Model M. I ended up getting two, both 1989 models. The second one feels pretty awful and inconsistent, so I bolt modded it, which didn't help much unless I really tighten the bolts down. Tightening the bolts makes the key travel shorter and the key press crisper, but it still feels wrong somehow. Maybe it just needs new springs.
I've thought about getting a Unicomp without the Windows or Menu keys so that I can put it in the vintage case to eliminate the creakiness and flex of the newer ones. I'm not sure if that would actually work because the fixed cable and potentially different controller board placement. Plus, I'm a bit interested in the trackball version and having Windows and Menu keys! Too many options... -
Do these keyboards work so you can press many keys at the same time?

Hey love your videos and I know you typically look at older boards but this one seems fairly interesting https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01D8YNJH0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_9AkiybA411FV2

Yay you reviewed it! I was hoping you'd look at the internals of the Unicomp, heard they aren't held together as well. Problems that seem exclusive to the black models are case blemishes and imperfections, looking at photos of the white ones it seems they don't have those issues. Good review though.

I only live one state away. I need to go visit this place.

Those are the only one keyboards, I mean mechanical keyboards I would like to use, or those with ALPS tactile clicky switches. Unicomps are perhaps to pricey, but the things we got for the bucks is far more better than those dumper ed mushy cherries and their clones, not to mention keyboards without casing, or those in 60% layout, made for fancy gamers. Full 101/104 ps/2, tactile, clicky, loud, heavy and sturdy, this is keyboard for me. It's a pity that unicomp does not offer coiled and detachable cable among other customization options... but who knows, they'l someday, maybe...

I would love to have a Unicomp keyboard, but they are just to big for my liking, and I really like having backlit keys on my boards.
-
I think that Eric S Raymond uses this one. I recall seeing it on a video.

I'm wondering; does the black finish on the plastic really look as bad as it does in photos? It seems to have a bit of a cheap look, like some form of poor quality plastic. Does it look like that in person? I like the black, but I would go for the white/cream if it doesn't look very good.
