Unicomp Classic 104 USB Model M Keyboard
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
i finally got one! unicomp is the company that aquired the rights from Lexmark to use IBM's buckling spring switches for keyboards. these are brand new model m keyboards that you can purchase in many forms and styles. the build quality isn't as good as the traditional model m but it's good enough that mechanically it's fine, the only flaws i see are cosmetic. i'd recommend these to anybody, they're great keyboards and feel exactly like the old ones do.

On Unicomp's website, the classic model they show have their right alt key and the right windows key swapped. How did you get yours with the correct ANSI layout where the right alt key is on the left and the right windows key on the right?
-
Do you find there are any tangible benefits to the "Classic" version over the space saving "Ultra Classic" version?

This product looks and feels solid as a rock when you get it, but BUYER
BEWARE! I did extensive research on which keyboard to buy because I
wanted something to last a lifetime. I am so tired of feeling guilty
for the ones that cost less than 25% of the price of this one that found
their way to the landfill over the years. I also wanted to support a
seemingly quality product manufactured in the US, so few that there are.
I treat all of my equipment very tenderly, and I do not eat or drink
anything around my computer. Within two months, the space bar would
just randomly stop working. And now, just about 10 months later,
suddenly 22 of my special character keys produce the wrong character
when I type. Notice there are none in this text. The product is under
warranty, but I live out of the country presently, and the cost for
shipping this 5 pound mammoth back and forth would equal the cost of the
keyboard. ANY keyboard a quarter of the price would last longer than a
year. And pay attention that the Unicomp warranty on this Model M
reproduction is only 1 year. How much confidence does that inspire?
People have Model Ms from the 1980s that are still working! I really
wanted to feel good about this purchase, but alas.... -
there is a steel plate in it. you bought the ultra classic, which is a bit lighter.
-
But what kind of molding is that?!
With all the dents and discolorations...
What, they didn't master the technology?
I would've expected that from some cheap Chinese keyboard, but not 90-100$ product supposed to be "old school".
Pathetic. -
do they make one with the ISO layout?
-
I'm glad Unicomp making these, I just picked up a Filco MT 2 Brown but i will keep this one in mind for the future.
thx -
Thanks for showing that the key caps come off thats important for cleaning the keyboard.

This or CM Storm QuickFire Rapid?

I bought one of these today at Goodwill for $3. The weight difference from a standard keyboard made it standout. I did not know anything about them until today.

I have used IBM Model M's since the mid '80s. I recently purchased a Unicomp Classic 104. Some comments: IBM Model M with coiled cable is 5 lb 4 oz. Unicomp Classic 104 is 3 lb 6 oz. Obviously made with the same molds but with lighter plastic. Top cover was about 100 gr lighter that the IBM top cover. Also, the 'metal' plate appears to be aluminum vs galzanized steel on the IBM. I could not confirm the layer of foam under the key mechanisms but the sound of the Unicomp is 'brighter' or a little louder. Doesn't feel as smooth when typing but very close to IBM.
Also, the labels are off center on some of the keys especially on Insert, Delete and 7/Home. Finally, the key groups are not positioned perfectly in the center of the top cover openings as they are on the IBM. To be fair this a $79 clone of a $295 IBM keyboard and on that basis is not a bad deal. -
Can you please test to see if interrupt command work on the usb version
Thanks -
You shipped with UPS? What are you, a masochist?
-
Ok. 2 years later. Was it worth $79 + tax & shipping? :)
-
Whats the difference between the usb and ps/2?
-
Also what's with the huge spacing between the keys? Mine doesn't have that unless Unicomp is making better models now.
-
The ultra doesn't have as many blemishes. I guess it's just the flat surfaces. The blemishes are still there but you really have to be be in a awkward angle and lighting to actually see them.
