Understanding The Universe
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Join astronomers and astrophysicists as they probe light years beyond the Milky Way, in Understanding The Universe, part of Discovery's popular television series. Narrated by actress Candice Bergen, This enriching and entertaining video employs graphic models and spectacular computer animation to illustrate some of the most complex theories of all time. Peer through the largest telescopes on Earth. Get a close-up look at our sun, nebulas and supernovas, capture by the Hubble Space Telescope. Listen via satellite to echoes of the Big Bang. See how "red Shift" among the stars suggests that our universe if much younger than previously thought. Visit the set of Star Trek: Voyager and ponder the questions, could black holes be "worm holes," or shortcuts to other worlds? Understanding the Universe boldly goes where no television show has gone before. Produced by Ron Bowman and Dan Everett Narrated by Candice Bergen Edited by Art Binkowski Music by Michael Whalen 51 minutes, English audio, 1996

the dinosaurs are ""65000,000, years old and god knew that man could not live on this planet with them... i still say they are no person on earth than can tell how old this planet is nor the universe we can guess we can give a raw estimate but not a pinpoint accurate date no one can hey the universe could be 89 billion years old we just don't know.....
-
don't waste your time thinking how old the universe is life is short each individual on this planet has been given one chance by Allah to spend his or her life on the right path and worship Allah so that each individual will be rewarded on the day of judgment

不可思议。

thank you sir,

Im sorry but they have no idea how to age a star. They don't know how old the universe is because they first need to know the size of it which they never will. They don't know how many stars there are because they don't know the size of the space that those stars are contained in. My point here is these scientist are guessing and assuming based on partial data. Im not trying to be nasty but come on. You can't sum up an equation when you only have parts of the data. This is purely just some swollen headed scientist basking in their own photons, with, im sure, some incentive for more grant money. Science is awesome but shouldn't the words "Possibly" or "so far we think" instead of claiming their findings are FINAL? Saying the Universe is this old or this big as fact is absolutely incorrect and it should be conveyed as an estimate. and not factual.. Example. They are convinced that the moon was created from a collision and they have closed the book on it as the final accurate conclusion. How did the gas planets acquire their moons ? It couldn't have been from a collision because those planets are made of GAS. So, doesn't that tell us those moons probably were captured by gravitational forces ? Which should leave the current theory about our moon in an open, unproven theory so far with all the options still on the table for discussion, instead of closing the book on it as the final complete answer to an obviously unknown fact?. Men used to think the earth was flat and ships would fall off the edge if they sailed to far. Laughs. Today. Our scientist are, in a way doing the same thing BEFORE they have the facts.

Its impossible to understand all the infinite details about the universe because infinity is far beyond what the mind can understand. But we dont need to understand all the details, we just have to understand the big picture. We just need to know what we cant know so we can just eliminate the things we cant understand anyway. We only need to focus on what we can know, anything else is wasted time. We wouldn`t want to understand everything anyways, beause it would take away the mystery of life. Google Truthcontest and read *The Present. Its the most simple, accurate and complete explenation of the big picture of the universe, and it will change everything when its seen by enough people.

Keep in mind that this documentary was published in 1996...so it's all science now 20+ years old. With a field like astrophysics, it means a lot of what you are seeing here is now way outdated and has been greatly expanded upon. Fun to see what we used to think though. And see all the scientists still wearing their oversized, 1980s eyeglasses. :)

Only one hundred years ago the bumbler Al Einstein thought the Universe was stagnant, created by God. Al Einstein's facts and math did not fit his view of a stagnant Universe to he added a cosmological constant, to change the Universe to fit his facts. Al changed the facts to fit his faith, as humans have for 10,000 years. That is how stupid we were as a species, just 100 years ago. Now, we have atomic bombs, computers, and cell phones, not to mention Coke, cars, and birth control. This is the most advance in the shortest time in the history of life on Earth. One billion people one hundred years ago, seven billion now. We need to get even smarter, a lot smarter, to make it all work.

first, who or what create the universe..and for what purposes..I would like to know too..

to answer the real important questions ya must look to god

And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and Allah has power over all things. Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding. Those who remember Allah (always, and in prayers) standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and think deeply about the creation of the heavens and the earth, (saying): "Our Lord! You have not created (all) this without purpose, glory to You! (Exalted be You above all that they associate with You as partners). Give us salvation from the torment of the Fire. "Our Lord! Verily, whom You admit to the Fire, indeed, You have disgraced him, and never will the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers) find any helpers. "Our Lord! Grant us what You promised unto us through Your Messengers and disgrace us not on the Day of Resurrection, for You never break (Your) Promise." (Quran c3 v189-194)

it was created by god. That's the only explanation. we don't know how stars were made or anything. no one has ever witnessed it. the theory is when gas clouds push together they form a solid (star). bs. when clouds come together under pressure, they push away from each other, not collapse into a solid. we don't know shit and never will. one other thing. the speed of light is not constant. it's been slowed down, sped up, and even stopped without the energy being drained. they've done it at Harvard and Cambridge. we're clueless and always will be. I don't see how anyone can look at science and the universe in particular and not say "wow, look what God created. And He still found the time to create little ole me."

How do we know what we already know about the universe at this point?
Because Murphy Brown told us so.
