This new telescope might show us the beginning of the universe | Wendy Freedman
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
When and how did the universe begin? A global group of astronomers wants to answer that question by peering as far back in time as a large new telescope will let us see. Wendy Freedman headed the creation of the Giant Magellan Telescope, under construction in South America; at TEDGlobal in Rio, she shares a bold vision of the discoveries about our universe that the GMT could make possible. The example she gives about the resolution cannot match the data Wikipedia given> wiki gives the angular resolution is about 0.21-0.3''. but the example, after calculation is about 0.01''? so she exaggerates it ? I don't know I am right or not.

why can americans not learn how to say mirror? it isnt pronounced "meer"
-
What could we see if they could build a telescope even bigger, 10 times, 100 times as large? Would the technology make it impossible or is cost the only deterrent?
-
This was a fantastic, interesting, and breathtaking speech, but I cracked up when she tried to say obrigado at the end.

The beginning of time is too red shifted to see you unlearned woman. I don't care how big your microscope is!
-
Learning about science is a misnomer. You mean learning about the natural world. Learning about science is history, philosophy, sociology of science etc
-
I do not think people fall in love with "science". The beginning statement is false. People wonder about and fall in love with nature. Science is just a method for forming hypothesis and testing it. It is not the only way humans discover the world around us, learn and/or make discoveries! For instance, did you need science to discover dirt in the sand box? No. You just put your hands in the dirt and could literally feel it. You didn't need to know about the chemical bonds between the silicon oxides to understand that the sand is hard and gritty! Did you need to learn Newtons ideas concerning inertia before you realized that a car doing 45 MPH was not going to stop on a dime? I am tired of these people equating discovery, wonder and nature with science. They are NOT the same ideas. Science is man made, nature is natural. They are NOT the same ideas.
Wendy Freedman needs to go back to her roots as a child and look at the world with the eyes of a 5 year old. She is absolutely over-educated. -
sexist pig

I really believe this is a waste of money and time because everything you see out there is gone due to the vast distances .we should focus on this planet and making it livable for generations to come.

whyd she rip her hair out. we all know what a hairs like and we cant see your handful from the camera or anyone from their seats ... crazy cat lady - albeit fascinating and thought provoking :)

The best thing that GMT did was the song Angel.

Thank God for that science teacher. He was able to inspire her when no one else could. So cynical and out for blood was she, it was just the bate he knew she needed. What a smart man that science teacher was. she'd never have made it this far without him. What a shrewd manipulation of an overtly hostile feminist character, cheers sir. That same cynical, "I beat you in a man's world", attitude still headlines her every speech, even to this day.

Sorry to say buy this will not do it. you guys have no idea

You know immediately you are dealing with bitter shrew. As soon as her mouth opens a stream of feminist bilge comes forth.
You just know she is a nightmare to work with. Every comment must calibrated not to offend her. She constantly demands special treatment due to the oppression she suffers daily. -
I cannot wait to see what that telescope picks up.

Is it just me or does this woman wanna make you get naked and look through a telescope.......
