The Unicomp Keyboard Unboxing
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Unicomp is the company that ended up with the rights (and probably the tooling) to make IBM's legendary Model M keyboard. They produce several variants to this very day. This one is the Customer 104 key model in a slate color with silver keys. In this video, I compare and contrast the two. Want one? http://www.pckeyboard.com/ The Keykeeper and I both bought one. I'd wanted to have one for some time, because I don't know how long Unicomp will be around. (They've been in business for over a decade, though.) For those who are thoughtful enough to read the descriptions, or check them again after a video has been uploaded :-) ... here are some links to further reading if you're still wondering why you might want an M: http://www.dansdata.com/ibmkeyboard.htm http://jseliger.com/2008/05/07/product-review-unicomp-customizer-keyboard/

I actually have the old IBM Model M keyboard and still use it on my main computer. I ended up getting this for free from a thrift store because this was from the free section outside the thrift store that they discard.

this may sound stupid but is a windows key even necessary? ive always just moused over to the start menu button on the taskbar and you have to drag your cursor over there to use the menu anyways
-
this video proved me to go to the unicomp webpage, and it appears they have a mac OS X specific keyboard available!!
This is great news, I will definitely be wording one...
Thank you Bill! -
69.99???? It's a shame the price has jumped up so much with the recent mechanical keyboard craze.

Knowing that anything you get new or used is somewhat hit or miss would someone be better off taking a chance on a used IBM Model M from Fleabay, etc. or going with a new Unicomp? I really need to get away from these mush keyboards. All of my systems have proper PS/2 ports so that isn't an issue. Color isn't important to me either as a good keyboard isn't a showpiece (aside from it being a Model M). As someone who has both I'm curious what your thoughts are.

I love looking at videos you do, since you know what you're talking about when it comes to this antique stuff.
I just commented elsewhere; I just ordered a Unicomp tonight to finally retire off my old Lexmark made, 1993 Model M. I've typed on this keyboard for 20 years. Got it as a child with my first used PC from a family friend. I learned to type, and spell on this exact keyboard and I have held on to, repaired, and maintained this for it's entire life. It's just getting to the point now where the space bar is unresponsive, and when it does respond, it will often spit out several spaces all at once.
It's been plugged in to countless computers. I've typed countless stories on it, conversed with countless friends for countless hours on countless messenger programs. Played tons of games with this keyboard, from Undetale, all the way back to Doom, and Wolfenstein 3D.
It still sits happily on my desk, waiting for me every day to type in my password, open up my favorite programs, and do all my usual routines with it. It looks so antiquated sitting under the glow of my 28" 4K monitor, plugged in to my modern Dell Optiplex 7010 (Yes, a 2014 Dell Optiplex still has PS/2 ports!)
I'm excited to get my new Unicomp one. Then I can retire this one, and hopefully repair it and keep it as a spare. Who would have thought something like this could last so long, and be such an important piece of a persons life, for so many years? -
@6:40 - I actually just purchased a Unicomp Classic and the shipping weight according to UPS was 7lbs. :)
-
Are they any good for gaming?
-
I just ordered an ultra classic (from Mass Drop) after trying buckling springs and cherry switches. I'm frothing at the mouth and vibrating right now.

Talk about a funny coincidence, I'm watching this video on that keyboard's 5th birthday! :P

Do you still use this keyboard? If so, is the quality as good as the old IBM Model M? I'm presently using a Matias Tactile Pro Mini for OS X and the Happy Hacking Pro 2 for Windows. Both are great, but don't have that authentic sound or feel of the one you're reviewing...

Nice unboxing! I've recently realized the benefits of mechanical keyboards, and have started to acquire a few. I'd love to get one of these classic Unicomp Model M keyboards for myself.
Quick question... I thought keyboard manufacturers had to use up-to-date Win key logos? This keyboard was made in 2010, well after the Vista-era icon had been in use. Or does that rule only apply to OEMs? I only ask because I have a bit of OCD and would want the current Win8-era icon on my keyboard. But I could most likely get a replacement keycap. -
Shame that Unicomp decided to ruin the Classic 104 layout by transposing the windows and alt keys to the right of the spacebar in recent days.
-
My computer is as old as this video yet it still has a PS/2 keyboard port (no PS/2 mouse though). I use it for my Dell AT102W keyboard which I got for £1! Real PC's have PS/2 ports!!

Man I would love a Model M 1391401 but they cost a fortune

I am very confused about why anyone, anywhere, would, for any reason, ever, EVER, purchase something that they know would be shipped by UPS Ground. Where I live, people say the word "UPS" with the same sort of intonation that they use for the word "Hitler" or "pedophile". It's astonishing that that company is allowed to legally exist. They are by all means evil. Not only does UPS ground cost on the order of $50 for international shipping, but they charge you $50 again when they show up at your door, and if you don't pay it, they ship it back with no possibility for refund. Why. Is. This. Legal.

I have a Key Tronic Keyboard, it's great to type on!!
-
The IBM model M and the original DEC VT-100 keyboards are my two favorites, worst keyboard I ever used was on a Gateway laptop of fairly recent manufacture, weird square keys, it was like trying to type on a calculator, awful design!

Unicomp's website says theres still a steel plate in their keyboards. Probably not as thick or strong though.
