About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Check below for links to the equipment, schematics, and more information- DIY Solar power may seem like a daunting task. Fear not, this video WILL set you on the right path. We start by unraveling the mystery of off-grid solar power and teach you the basics, how to understand and think about your system. From there, we show you how to access and size the proper system for an off grid back-up or full time off grid system. Once you've got that squared away, we talk all about batteries. Of all the components, batteries are probably the most misunderstood. There are some nuances in solar power that you must be aware of; this video will set you straight on where to mount and how to wire your panels for the best efficiency. Speaking of efficiency, do you know the difference between an MPPT and PWM solar charge controller? Just watch the video. Often the most overlooked component of any off grid system is safety, and for that we've got you covered as well. Finally, we finish up talking about living with your new system. There are LOTS of links in the video to the components used, schematics, and further information. ALL of these can be found on our "Ultimate Guide to Off Grid Solar" page- http://goo.gl/e5uZ49 Lastly, we talked about the upcoming Renogy Lycan Powerbox, check it out Renogy and the power box here- http://goo.gl/8Ms1o0 The Kill-A-Watt meter for measuring your consumption- http://goo.gl/DSBem4 Schematic of the Tin Hat Ranch 400 Watt Renogy System- http://goo.gl/UEmIe3 Renogy 400 Watt Premium Solar Kit http://goo.gl/20z4Q6 Renogy 1000 Watt Pure Sine Wave Inverter: http://goo.gl/mO7jxB Solar Assessment Worksheet- http://goo.gl/3KVxYY Batteries Plus: http://goo.gl/I50qww Duracell SLIGC125: http://goo.gl/32JmnS Music: "Come Play With Me" by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

Thank you! You explained it very well and answered many questions I had and saved me money, time and aggravation!

your stove and dyer is like 3-5k watts! these tiny systems won't do fuck all for off gride living. you wanna live comfy and offgrid? you will need 15k-20k WATT solar panel system! probably cost 100k

i want to know about adding super capacitors to fridge/freezers as these use massive starting power, forget whats on the back of them thats after starting

like the boefeng handheld !!!

Excellent guide. Thank you.

This vid is gold. Thanks for sharing. Subbed

excellent presentation and so well understood for some one who knows boat wiring and batteries. The novice will get this thanx to your straight forward and touch of humor. good on you.

Excellent. info...thank you. Sub.....

The BIGGEST problem with running your home on solar is the cost of true sinewave inverters... 😔
-
What about running stuff like led lighting and whatever else you can off of dc to cut losses due to the inverter

"Lets talk about it like it's money because everyone can understand that" Yeah you haven't met my Girlfriend.. She'll just borrow beg or steal.

At 7:30 does that little cloud look like a face to anyone else?!?!?!?

so a small coffee pot takes 800 watts?

I just about got my solar backup system ready. Just waiting for a replacement inverter from Amazon as the first one had a defect. (It's always something.) My system should be able to run my big modern side-by-side fridge 24/7 for somewhat extended blackouts, and if I unplug it I can run my 1600 watt bread making machine, 1600 watt Keurig coffee maker, 1400 watt microwave, 1500 watt electric griddle, ham radio, etc.
It's been a fun experiment so far. I'm working on a 'top of pole' mount' for the panels using the hardware from an old Directv dish. I want to be able to rotate the panel towards the sun as needed, as opposed to a permanent mount which requires more panels to capture the same amount of sunlight. Just rotating them three times a day (morning, noon, afternoon) will give you a big burst of daily battery charging. -
Um yeah no internet but there is a thing called pirate bay lol, offline steam, consoles offline, and make sure you got 40 terabyte of memory and fill that up as much as possible with tutorials and movies/ games/music and porn lol cause if youre alone ur gonna get bored half to death, oh if you want multiplayer on video games just put a lan network up, but dont forget about protection and food also shelter make sure you get a badass impeccable fortess

Great vid

how about solar PVT hybrids for heat and power?
How about solar thermal at very low costs, with low cost hot water storage that can support home heating and cut air conditioning running costs by 30% by using the heated water to heat the gas before it hits the compressor -
start by switching to DC solar lighting and boil a kettle by a gas stove, not electric

rouf rouf rouf grrrr.... rouf rouf
