The Sun's Motion Around the Solar System Barycenter
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Some time ago an online user tried to claim that the sun sits at the center of the solar system, and that the solar system's center of gravity stays inside the sun (basically at its center) at all times. I ran and rendered this simulation in Celestia 1.6 to show that their claim was not true. The simulation runs at 16777216 x real time from 2014 to 2117; the yellow text objects are known comets that are expected to pass through the inner solar system during the simulated period, and the blue lines are the orbits of the planets, whose names pass along the orbits as they pass through the view. You will note the movement of the sun in relation to the movements of Jupiter and Saturn, especially. The music is from my Serenade for Strings Number 2 in A, "La Transformation" and is ©2004 William F. Maddock

A true gem. Had I not fortuitously run into a simplified version of the Sun's motion around the SS barycenter, I wouldn't have understood this beautiful presentation. The care taken with meticulously labeling expected comets and the planetary orbits combined with beautiful original music .... a joy for ear and mind.
Thank you.
