Is what we see in the night sky a true representation of our universe? Find out about Gravitational Lensing in this episode and even more about it in the documentary that Matt made together with the Museum of Natural History:Distant Quasars: Shedding Light on Black Holes http://www.amnh.org/explore/science-bulletins/(watch)/astro/documentaries/distant-quasars-shedding-light-on-black-holes Get your own Space Time tshirt at http://bit.ly/1QlzoBi Tweet at us! @pbsspacetime Facebook: facebook.com/pbsspacetime Email us! pbsspacetime [at] gmail [dot] com Comment on Reddit: http://www.reddit.com/r/pbsspacetime Support us on Patreon! http://www.patreon.com/pbsspacetime Help translate our videos! http://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?tab=2&c=UC7_gcs09iThXybpVgjHZ_7g Niels Bohr, a Danish Physicist said “Everything we call real is made of things that cannot be regarded .” Is what we see perceived to be real or is it an illusion? In the world of our mind’s eye, light travels in a straight line. In reality, spacetime is deflected and magnified through the lens of gravity. Find out how this works and what it allows us to learn about our universe in this episode of Space Time. Can you force quantum tunneling with super-thin objects like graphene and gold foil?
-
If a gravitational lens can make a quasar appear to us in four slightly different locations in our sky, does that mean the photons indicating one of the quasar's four appearances may have traveled a longer or shorter path than the photons indicating the other three appearances?

it's really amazing how our universe still continues to surprise us

can u plz provide the subtitles of this video

Can someone tell me what is the "way" function?

Not to be overly juvenile or anything, but look at the crotch of his pants at the 3:30 mark,... at first I thought those were bleach stains,... then I laughed when I thought what kind of, um, "uniquely peculiar" personal anatomy might cause such constant wear and tear in just those spots. Then I finally realized it was the background stellar imagery partially superimposed digitally over all of him.... LOL! I wonder if the editor ever noticed that in post-production...

Why am I here? I am a biology student.

Is it more likely that nothing(space) is expanding, or that all particles are not points but endless waves, and a force of observation(present) is traveling inward through 4d(true time) like that of the shape of a tesseract activating them by means of observation through electromagnetic enigmas such as the brain? . . the faster an object is moving in 3d relative to another object, the more transitions through 4d required, explaining inertia, gravity, time distortion and the idea that these frames were there in the past and future, theories could explain how concentrations of dark(past or future) 4d transitions of particles affect light that travels into their invisible path and creates gravitational lensing.

3:27 nice balls bro

Is it possible to quantum tunnel from the moon to the earth?
-
your wrong it dosen't work that way cause gravity dosent exist in space

Hi Matt, i've been reading up on gravitational lensing for a few months. In the end, I found myself trying to understand the many interactions that can affect a photon of light. How well is this understood over such long journies and large energies ? It seems that the smallest of omissions would change everything (i.e. estimates of rotation and mass of galaxies) on the cosmic scale. I'd like to see a video on how they science this. How big does the error in red or blue shift need to be for us to no longer need dark matter or modified theories of gravity ? If light was stretched ever so much by something other than an expanding universe, what would it take ? The videos are brilliant, cheers.

That would be crazy if we found out that only a conscious observer could 'collapse the wave function ' and observe the position of a particle. What would that mean for our understanding of the universe???
-
Gravity is a garbage concept!. If there is only a single matter..gravity does not exist!
-
Perhaps someone can help with my question. We are seeing the same quasar at multiple different points in time??
-
why we see four lensed images, not three or a hundred?

Being that a star has an atmosphere (corona) couldn't refraction also have an effect on a star's light as it passes through its corona? To put it another way, how can one tell whether a star's apparent position is a result of refraction rather than gravity?

If there's perfect balance between the amount of Hawking radiation of a black hole of a certain mass, and the amount of energy it absorbs (stuff sucked in) per unit of time, wouldn't there be a stable orbit for light just outside the event horizon?
(of course, that is just an ideal state) -
Who can tell if the observer makes the observations or if, contrarily, the observations make a given observer ? After all, true twins are different persons mainly because they have lived slightly different experiences from the womb on.
