The Space Shuttle's Last Flight: As Atlantis completes its 135th and final mission, this definitive documentary charts the rise and fall of the most ambitious space programme ever undertaken, the space shuttle. For the past three decades since it first launch in 1981, the shuttle has become an iconic symbol of America's technological dominance while at the same time rewriting the rules of space travel. Here is reusable vehicle that could lift off like a rocket, carry people and cargo into Earth's orbit, then land on a runway like a plane and do it time after time. But two disasters, in 1986 and 2003, and the tragic loss of 14 astronauts shocked the World, and signalled the end of the programme, and the end of an era. However, its legacy has been extraordinary. In 30 years of service, the shuttle has flown more miles, completed more missions and put more men and women in orbit than any other spacecraft in history. It has transformed our understanding of the universe, aided technological advancement, and enabled us to study the environmental consequences we have had on our planet. After this July, when the shuttle takes its last flight, the USA will no longer be able to put a man in space for the first time in over half a century. Released: July 23, 2011 Genres: Documentary Countries: UK Actors: Patrick Baladi

1:50 "one small problem not spotted by engineers will mean catastrophe for the crew" , more like one problem found by engineers which is deferred as a maintenance issue by NASA management will mean catastrophe for the crew, smdh.

Bunch of liars! The assholes are taking you on a journey to nowhere.

I was a child when I stood at the huge window of my dad's office as we watched the space shuttle on the back of that huge plane as she came to visit the UK on her fly around the world introduction I have since then watched every launch and every landing including the 2 tragic losses of shuttles and crews.
She was unique as space vehicles go, she was beautiful to watch and see. She has earned her place in history, and I miss her. -

Jebadiah was here.

The only reason the government and fking Bush ended the space program and the Shuttle is to lay off thousands of people so they wont have to pay these hard working pensions . You put in 18 years of work for a company all to be layed off .

I took my family to Kennedy Space Center this past January. We saw the shuttle Atlantis beautifully displayed slightly angled, and resting on giant steel supports, with her bay doors open in her new building. What a sight to see.
And last month during my daughter's Spring Break, we drove to Wash. D.C. We visited the Smithsonian Udvar-Hazy Center and saw shuttle Discovery. She's equally as awesome sitting proudly on display with her landing gear down. My goodness, what beautiful machines!!
To answer some of the questions below about NASA's future, during our visit to KSC, we had the pleasure of meeting Astronaut Jon McBride and hearing him speak in the auditorium. If I recall correctly he basically said NASA is finished going back and forth to the ISS. That's what SpaceX and any other private company are around for, including other countries. NASA has nothing else to prove by ferrying supplies and people to the ISS. They're big focus is deep space exploration, including a big push to land on Mars. -
Hmm Hope we explore more of our universe, be a really leap up for mankind

0:38 he says and to celebrate the crap that has shown our planet and the universe...

The space shutle was the only proof that america had power and ambition, now we are payng the politicians to drive lamborghini, athletes to wear the "latest diamond skirt" and celebrities to photograph theyr fingernails! Nasa is stuck with cheap LEO and RKA is taking care of the ISS all by herself, way to go NASA!
