Its official program name was Space Transportation System, taken from a 1969 plan for a system of reusable spacecraft of which it was the only item to be funded for development. The first of four orbital test flights occurred in 1981, leading to operational flights beginning in 1982. It was used on a total of 135 missions from 1981 to 2011 all launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. If you like PC Games visit: http://www.freemmorpgtoplay.com/

Around point 7:40, they talk about the extreme heat. That is why the Columba crew should have been saved. They knew the heat it created, and saw the hole that would leak into the ship. How sad NASA ignored it, instead of sending Atlantis (underway for a mission) up with tools to fix it and save the crew/historic ship.

When was this filmed?

This is such primitive technology and if you ask Ben Rich (formerly of Skunkworks) they have much more advanced vehicles that can take ET home without the huge risks that these old crates suffer.

Ah, I did not know that.

No I did not work for NASA nor did I enter the aerospace industry. My father worked for Northrop Grumman, a subcontractor. NASA itself actually didn't build the shuttle. Companies like Lockheed, Northrop Grumman and Boeing were contracted to build the various Shuttle systems and structures.

My condolences. Did you follow in is footsteps and join NASA?

This video deals with the space shuttle. The space shuttle has heat resistant tiles. The tiles were placed on the fuselage to keep the shuttle from over heating on re-entry. The tile application process was changed in the late 80's which caused them to fall off prematurely resulting in the Columbia accident. This was all explained in the video. Did you watch it? My father just passed and it's interesting to shuttle enthusiasts the different roles people played in the historic program.
