The Secret History of the Mandaeans
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
The Mandaeans are the last remaining Gnostic sect from antiquity, today a living religion full of folklore and magic. Recent scholarship reveals that their views are closer to ancient Gnosticism than ever assumed. The Mandaean cosmology, theology, and pantheon could have come out of Nag Hammadi library itself or from the mouth of the Prophet Mani. We deeply mine the Mandaean ethos and culture for breathtaking insights that can be useful to any modern practitioner of mysticism; this includes the enigmatic Mandean relation to the Knights Templar, John the Baptist, and primordial magical systems. Lastly, we learn about the tenuous Mandaean plight in the Middle East after several wars in Iraq and the rise of Isis—a microcosm of the continuing story of the Gnostic against the furious hate of orthodoxy throughout history. Very nice conversation. The Nag Hammadi represents the prose of the Gnostics but the Mandaean scriptures are the poetry! I'm a fan of what's been translated into English: The Canonical Prayerbook of the Mandaeans (E.S. Drower), Mandaean Gnosis: A Selection of Gnostic Texts, Vol. 2 - Coptic and Mandean Sources (by Werner Foerster), and the Gnostic John the Baptizer: Selections from the Mandaean John-Book (G.R.S Mead).
