Shouldn't it also stretch out in front of you up until the point before the machine is switched off again, allowing you to go forward as well

The concepts espoused and popularized by Albert Einstein are wrong. Moreover, there is no such thing as "time", it does not exist apart from the processes acting which change upon identifiable objects and phenomena. Life and Death in the epistomological dimensions we measure and observe are permanent on their standards, they are not connected to or derived by an independent mover called "time". Time is a construct we create to explain and measure change.
