The race to space (vpro backlight documentary)

The colonization of space has only just begun. Numerous parties have great ambitions to explore outer space for tourism, transportation and raw materials. It’s a race, and slowly but surely it’s becoming clear that there is a need for clear rules concerning the entering and use of this space. Space lawyer Frans von der Dunk is currently one of the few people in the world who is trying to shed some light on this. On a sunny morning in 1889, hundreds of covered wagons were ready to start a race. Under the motto ‘first come, first served’, settlers could claim their own piece of land. This Oklahoma Run got completely out of control. Today, we're on the eve of a new colonization: this time it’s outer space. The new space race is about the claims that can be made: to space itself and to the various planets and asteroids. It seems everyone wants to go into space. Whether you want to plant the national flag of China, the Czech Republic or Israel, or mine raw materials. Whether your company is called Deep Space Industries or Planetary Resources, and whether your name is Elon Musk or Richard Branson. Countries have strategic and political interests, companies have commercial ones, plus there is a growing number of wealthy adventurers who want to explore space. Up till now, the 1967 Outer Space Treaty was the starting point for ‘space law’, but it’s completely outdated. The massive and irreversible space race which is about to start is crying out for a new legislation that’s clear to all parties involved. Frans von der Dunk, professor of Space Law at the University of Nebraska, has written the first manual for outer space. He hopes his book will become the first real standard work for the new space legislation. As a pioneer in the field of space law, he is now consulted around the world by companies and countries with extraterrestrial ambitions. The main questions are about resolving conflicts concerning the extraction of raw materials, which is the topic of a forthcoming important and potentially historic moment: the adoption of the so-called Asteroid Act by the U.S. Senate. With this act, the United States wants to give American companies the opportunity to mine raw materials in space. But it’s a national law, so the U.S. is ignoring other countries, risking international conflicts as a result. So Frans von der Dunk has his work cut out for him. VPRO Backlight traveled with space lawyer Frans von der Dunk for a month. His agenda is filled with exciting and surprisingly diverse meetings in the world of space travel: from Vienna to Washington, from Abu Dhabi to Jerusalem. With: Frans von der Dunk (space lawyer and professor of Space Law at the University of Nebraska), Buzz Aldrin (the second man on the Moon) and Peter Marquez (former Space Policy advisor for presidents Bush and Obama, and currently vice president Planetary Resources). Director: Kees Brouwer VPRO Backlight December 2015 Our globalized world causes societies, economies and cultures to seek a new balance. they should work on space soldiers while working on this project in case other countries attack us while a mining run when we finish this project

SO BASICLY ALL THE US & RUSSIA INVESTMENT GETS TO BE TAKEN OVER $$ BY JERKOFFS
-
34:26 wow what about people on earth now?
-
I smell wars in space over those minerals. US, again is showing its greed. I hope Russia finds a way to bypass that space act.
-
There will be no cities in space. AI will be invented till the end of this century and will take over the humanity eventually. Say bye bye to our biological civilization...
-
wow only if they could create jobs for people they could count on me
-
Get your ass to Mars! Haha, awesome
-
if these powders will be revoved in the outerspace we will be cooked alive under the heat of the sun. Did you consider that as negative effects in the future?
-
am I the only one who see subliminal pictures in the video?
-
All I have to say is good luck. Good luck imposing order on the Americans and Chinese; as soon as it becomes a power position for those guys, your little rules will be nothing but a giant crater.
-
Jews out!
-
Wow, that's scary, muslims wearing burkas shooting icbm's into space
-
Islam in space, just what the universe needs....

music in 1:49????

Oh i get it. Obama wants to be galactic emperor. The first galactic empire. Just like Star Wars sci-fi.
I will take Venus plus 4 star destroyers, 2 death stars, 4 milion space soldiers and make a deal with the superior races to give me the ultra high technology. You can feel free to dig on asteroids for platinum with your obsolette apollo style technology. We gonna laugh at your astronauts while have a drink in our galactic ships. Even better we can give the technology to the general public. So everyone will have free energy. No more resources required. No oil, fuel whatsoever. Then the companies gonna lose their bussiness and governments will no longer exist. No ruling elite.
I got methods and designs for star wars style crafts. Not apollo style.
Venus is most important because we will build the ships from carbon nanotubes. Not from steel. And the propulsion system will be SnS,UART and elecrical/mechanical methods.
All Star Wars sci-fi crafts you see in the movies i can make them for real (without FTL for now).
Milenium Falcon from carbon/carbon nanotubes. Also i have designs for drones/probes which can scan any planet. Take pictures and video of every square cm surface. Then we can know if there is life forms on planet or not. Also we can put the videos/pics on youtube so everyone to see.
if there is greedy company/country that want to do this we can start right now. -
I would have very much liked some more critical explanation, if not even arguing, because the interest of humanity, very obviously, it is not the real reason. Does anyone believe that?
-
listen very carefully at 45:40
this is what it is all about, and that chap definetly talks too much, making the other feeling unconfortable, and looking at the camera... -
if that chap at 44.00 was twice director, it is very easy to understand how such directors of huge things decide actually nothing, they just do as they are told from who is really running the show.

I
really wish that, rather than all these countries going it alone (or in
relatively small collaboration), that all the various space programs
would come together to work as an international community.
Space exploration really is more of an issue of the entire human race, not just individual countries :)
