Searches for planets have endeavored to find not only large Jupiter-sized planets, but smaller objects more similar to the size of the Earth. The Pale Red Dot campaign, marshaling astronomical facilities around the world, discovered that an Earth-mass planet lies in the star system closest to us! It may be that the planet is cool enough to contain water at the surface. And this is just the beginning of such discoveries! Join Tony Darnell and Carol Christian as they discuss with Michale Endl (The University of Texas at Austin and McDonald Observatory) and Avi Mandell (NASA Goddard Space Flight Center,) the search, discovery, and possible nature of this nearby planet. The best place to watch the hangout will be on YouTube, broadcast on the Deep Astronomy Channel. In affiliation with the American Astronomical Society and the American Astronautical Society. We might as well admit it, we're getting stuck with Class M, being a habitable Earthlike Planet. And for the first time M is not a scientist or a god.

the radiowaves came from an unregistered russain satalite...(apparentley)

Would be cool to see you on joe rogan podcast
-
could this planet ever be a candidate for Starshade Imaging? If it were, that could be a huge impetus to develope and invest in the technology
-
is it possible to determine if this planet is a single planet or a double planet/ planet with large moon?
-
Coffee from space? mmmmm is nice i like
-
Tony, get anti-reflective coatings for your glasses

Hey! you know Radio waves from Proxima Centuri were picked up by SETI just a few days ago???
It sure is earths closest hope of life now! Apparently they were very high powered radio waves! -
Astronomers hang around talking about science while drinking coffee? Um, Starbuds?

50:42 It sounds like transiting would be exciting for other reasons as well, since wouldn't that help remove the whole <1.3 earth mass question? I would think that interest of a habitable planet would increase dramatically in the event that anyone ever thought that there was a chance of someone eventually being able to survive on it, and an earth mass sounds a lot more approachable than something that has enough gravity to crush me or prevent anything on it's surface from getting back into space.
If there is an atmosphere on a tidally locked planet in the habitable zone, what hope is there really of detecting water accurately? I would expect that over time, any water vapor would condense and freeze on the far side, removing it from the atmosphere and any detectability. -
The smaller stars will last a lot longer, and don't they also mix the core gases a lot more than our sun which also adds time to their active age.

nice episode. highly underrated :)

Good hang out! Nice to get a better picture of what "we" have actually discovered. Also a good forum, it seemed. A little more relaxed and open. Thank you!
-
Lets be correct : This planet is 73,000 years away at 34 miles a second to get there. Astronomers don't realize how big distances to other stars its just a number.

Thanks Tony.

I hear about NASA stuff always, but what's going on in Russia/Japan/etc space agencies?
-
Just as a suggestion, keep it punchier and shorter. With all your hangouts you are asking us to invest a fair amount of time now each month. How about a coffee break that's 30 or 40 mins rather than an hour? Lose all the padding at the front. No need for intros. This is a coffee break. Let people talk. Just hangout! Get into the caffeine quick!

I'm a little disappointed in Alpha Centauri for not showing up with a fungus filled exoplanet.
-
So how do we know they're not bullshitting? How do we know they're not just trying to inspire kids to come up with ways of going there just to see what's there? "novus ordo seclorum" It hasn't taken full effect yet has it?

great show, can't wait until next week. 😎
