Technically, the 999 was JNR C62 locomotive. It had 2-6-2 wheel arrangement and were the fastest japanese steam locomotives. Thus making the C62 perfect for the role of the 3-9.

A buddy of mine (a die hard steam fan, and a die hard Galaxy Express fan) got a cab ride on a 3-9 special once. They let him take the throttle. How die hard of a 3-9 fan is he? since there was no O scale (1:48) model of 3-9, he scratchbuilt it. He also modified a commercial Big Boy to be Big One, and scratch built the cars.

The Endless Journey of the GE3-9 [The Galaxy Express 999] is symbolic of Youth; the point of Tetsuro (Hoshino Tetsuro)'s journey to acquire a machine-body in order to have an immortal life, is to show that much of what has genuine worth, only becomes valued by sentient life, humankind in particular, because life can be lost too swiftly---so that Love, and Hope, if not grasped quickly, can be lost. Even though in truth, they are part of that which endures for all Eternity. Even though the Rings of Time return together, and then part again---Love, and Hope, still endure---so any that truly seek them, even unknowingly, will to be able to find them.

This is the opening theme of GE 999's OAV that i posted 2 weeks ago ^_^ Can i ask you who sing the song of the videoclip? Unfortunately, I couldn't put the original soundtrack of Godiego "Exile" at the beginning of the video, so i was forced to remove it :(
