The Formation of our Galaxy - Professor Joseph Silk
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Professor Joseph Silk explains what the relics of the earliest universe can tell us about our past and our future: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/the-formation-of-our-galaxy A typical galaxy, like our Milky Way, has one hundred billion solar masses in stars. It is remarkable that one can do back-of-the-envelope estimates that lead to predictions of the characteristic mass of a galaxy. I will describe how galaxies formed. Beginning from infinitesimal fluctuations in the early universe, gravity helped concentrate the matter into clouds that fragmented into stars and assembled into galaxies. With the largest telescopes, one can look back in time and decipher the remote signatures of galactic youth and even birth. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/the-formation-of-our-galaxy Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website. There are currently over 1,800 lectures free to access or download from the website. Theorists try to understand the observations by making reasonable assumptions that give reliable predictions. Never does this stand still and never will it mean you're right. But it is a reasonable approach. Let's keep God out of it. This effort can never diminish His eminence but it has created many atheists and humanists, go figure.

Could we please dispense with the silly and apocryphal "apple" story?

Fascinating. Whether or not our best cherished notions/theories about the ultimate parameters--origin/destination, time, space, mass, momentum, turbulence, and chaos-of our familiar, baryon dominated, universe prove correct or not, a college lecture is, as the learned professor, Joseph Silk, alluded, a snapshot of a field of understanding which will never (we hope) stand still. A wonderful lecture and thanks many times for posting it, Gresham.
