Elon Musk’s SpaceX program proposes that 100 people could be sent to colonize Mars within 10 years. What might that colony look like? This episode was supported by Curiosity Stream. Not to be outdone, Elon Musk boldly stated that he could prepare a mission to Mars within 10 years. Musk’s SpaceX plan would transport a hundred people to the red planet. Their mission wouldn’t be to visit Mars but to colonize it. In this episode of Space Time Matt breaks down the challenges that the first humans on Mars would face and how they could overcome them. Wouldn't nuclear be a better option for energy generation on a martian colony?
Solar panels would be damaged contently by micro meteorites and receive only a fraction of the energy they would if on Earth due to Mars's increased distance from the sun. -
We need a bigger colony. We need resources available on Mars to support this colony. We need to resolve the radiation shielding problem while in transit to Mars. We need an economic reason to settle Mars.
I would like to solve the problem of creating orbital colonies and colonies in the asteroid belt as the production of advanced metals, pharmaceuticals, and power would give us the economics to push forward. For this, the radiation is definitely the problem. -
Mars is too mainstream for me, I want to enter Uranus.
-
This makes me want to watch the movie.
-
Solar Panels cant work without very very large battery banks. Mars has seasons of dust storms
-
The answer is simple, just find oil in Mars that murica going to colonize Haha

after watching` passage to mars `,its obvious we cant ! .Way to many single point failures. There's places on earth that we not managing to survive ! And nowhere without robbing 200 years of stored sunshine splurged in less than 200
If we `want` to get off earth I suspect massive genetic manipulation to ourselves and avoiding gravity wells (planets) like the plague.Plenty of resources off planet and your potentially lots more mobile . -
Take all the politicians. Never bring them back
-
Couldnt we just use heavy clothing to avoid low g problems ?
-
Would it be possible that an advantage of mars would be a lack of diseases or pests to kill livestock and crops so farming would be much easier
-
I idea of sending anyone to Mars is silly. Develop robots with AI capabilities then send hundreds. Then bring back samples to study on Earth. Let commercial companies develop 🚀. Stop wasting tax dollars on a one off trip that costs billions.
-
Van Allen wish you best of luck. :D
-
Why not build into the mountains of Mars and use it as a natural home ?
-
Pfffffttt 10 years. No way! We don't even have our shit together with our current supply of essential resources (water, efficient energy source, oxygen production more lightweight than trees). It's gonna be 100s of years.
-
Holy shit mind blown: noah's ark is actually a giant spaceship transporting everyone to Mars in prep to leave the solar system for the Sun dying. We have a few billion years to reach this goal.
-
Maaaaaaaaars!

The problem with growing food hydroponically is that, because of the nature of how hydroponics work and because of the accelerated ate of growth seem in most plants when grown hydroponically, you would need to be able to provide the level of nutrients required for a successful harvest. I would like to know where you would find these nutrients. yes, you could probably find a few of them in the soil, but the entire idea behind hydroponics is that it is completely soil-less.
