What does it even mean for the universe to have a “shape”? If you traveled far enough, would you end up where you started? I discuss these questions and more in today’s Ask a Spaceman! The paradigm demonstrating that the universe is flat because lines that start parallel do not intetsect as if they did, were we on the surface of a sphere, demonstrates we are on the surface of a spheric universe, but not that we are not insight.

Just because you have a concept of the universe being flat doesn't mean it is. That's just like scientist estimate that the universe is some 13.8 Billion years old because that is the most distant object we can observe. But what would you see if you could go to that distant point and look again in the same direction, would you see the same amount of distance of a new object that is 13.8 billion light years away or would you end up at the original point? We are small and insignificant in our thinking to imagine that we have anything right. Give us a couple of million years and see if that idea has changed.

Why is every youtuber on Earth asking me to subscribe.. just stop it guys.

Hi Paul, Thank you very much for explaining this. Please also help me to understand better. My paper cylinder is flat, but inside it there is a void (currently filled with air), but in the universe, what occupy that void? Just void, it's hard for me to visualize and understand. But I would like to know a bit more than I do now.

THIS! This is incredible! First time I've heard of this! I love it!

How does an expanding universe cause redshift? If space expands while light is traveling through it, why doesn't it just make the light have travel farther to reach us? Or is the extra distance what is causing the redshift?
-
It is indeed fascinating to think about this.
Are you talking about the observable or the whole universe?
If we are in a compact or closed manifold, it still could be possible to have parallelluniverses, but not as much as in an open manifold.
But if we assume, that the universe infinite and the observable universe is flat, that doesn't necessarily mean that the whole universe is too.
The observable universe could be that infinitesimal small compared to the rest, that it would seem, that all is a compact manifold.
But it could also be, that there is not much outside of our cosmic horizon. -
So interesting to watch! One of my favorite channels by far.

These topologies have no impact on anything observable though, right? So then if it happens at unobservable scales, the scientific conclusion should be that it is just continuously flat.
As a second point: if one travels far enough and reaches the starting point again... How would they know that is not like a copy of the original position, you know like it can randomly happen in an infinite (or at least large enough) universe. -
I think when you talk about these things it would help alot to have visual representations or some kind of model. It would be a lot easier to understand

18 possible topologies ? please provide a reference, journal or text, for further research ?
What dimensionality do the 18 topologies exist ? If String Theory's 11 Dimensions can be validated, what flat topologies would then be possible ? -
Dr Sutter great video! Your last video, aliens are never the answer; what would your answer be to the Drake equation?
