STS-129 Atlantis Landing - View Through HUD
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Landing of STS-129 Atlantis from a pilot's perspective seen through the HUD. Note the extended runway centerline shown on the HUD at 1 min 20 sec into the video. Also the very steep approach from a high altitude and the target aim point well short of the runway. See FREE online magazine Speedi Wings & Wheels - www.speedi.tv

Also note that the touchdown aim point isn't the usual one striped on the runway. Because the first 2000 feet of the runway are grooved they deliberately touch down at somewhere around 2200 ft. to reduce tire wear. If you want to see a shuttle pilot hit the aim point stripes check out Ken Mattingly on STS-4!

Huh, My SIM landings aren't as bad as I thought. Not quite the same though.

The "Extended Runway Centerline" Is due to The Microwave landing system the shuttle used. The base of that line is the shuttle "Aim Point" to line up and guide the shuttle to a successful runway landing. the astronauts use that spot to aim for rather than a spot on the runway....as we seen it brings them home every time!

Congratulations, you've made a perfect landing. Within the nominal touchdown zone, on centerline.
