SpaceX has asked the U.S. government for permission to launch an internet network powered by thousands of satellites above the Earth. According to FCC documents, SpaceX plans to deploy more than 4,000 satellites to create a global, high-speed internet network. That's three times the 1,419 satellites that are currently in space, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists, a not-for-profit group made up of scientists across the world. "The system is designed to provide a wide range of broadband and communications services for residential, commercial, institutional, government and professional users worldwide," SpaceX said in the FCC filing. SpaceX's satellites will orbit at altitudes between 1,150 kilometers and 1,275 kilometers, allowing each one to cover a space of around 2,120 kilometers wide. According to the official filing, each satellite will weigh around 850 pounds and be the size of a small car. Musk estimated the project would take at least five years and cost around $10 billion dollars. According Elon Musk satellite internet can build a foundation for funding mission to Mars Launching high-speed internet network could also be a blueprint for more ambitious plans — this is Elon Musk we are talking about here, after all. The SpaceX CEO last year hinted that the project could lay the foundation for an internet service in Mars, the planet he famously looking to colonize. Internet access would be a basic requirement for anyone who wanted to travel to the red planet, particularly given the high-cost of such a trip, and Musk reckons the first flight could happen within the next decade. One thing that we can be surer of is that SpaceX is looking to start the project gradually beginning with an initial fleet of 800 satellites, assuming that it is successful with its application, which would then be increased over time. Could Elon Musk become a modern Cosimo de' Medici, the 15th Century Banker to the Pope?POSSIBLE IMPACTS of his Internet satellite network ambitions:* Democratization of Education to emerging nations through distance learning* Improved global health & wellness through telehealth, leading to dramatic increases in average lifespan, as well as over-population issues that might encourage some sort of genocide * Lower wages in developed countries as work is outsourced to populations with the cheapest workers, or automated by technology* Control of public opinion and "fake news" through deep packet inspection and filtering* Manipulation & control of world financial systems as they move online with systems like BitCoin* Control of global politics, favoring friendly politicians and nations* Spark a world war if China, Russia or others view this as a threat and begin destroying each new satellite as they go onlineIt's one thing for such power to be in the hands of a government that is supposed to serve public interests but still might be manipulated by politicians and special interests. It's quite another for such power to be in the hands of a single individual, or a corporation that is legally bound to serve shareholder investment interests rather than public interests. Even as a retired IBM technologist and futurist with a historically optimistic view of the future, I worry about the potential negatives of the widening wealth gap and concentration of power as the pace of tech innovation accelerates exponentially and continually, and as capital adds more value than labor.

Confusing! In last 2-3 years Elon announced plans for 730m 3k+, and now 4k+... And who is gonna pay for that? Considering US Federal Spending 3.8T per year - 10bil requested for that project in 5 years..., is nothing. But! for 850lb per 4k satellites makes it - 2.5mil$ and it's 3k$ per one pound... Maybe that price includes cost of satellite? And Mask already talked about providing internet on Mars. Also he mentioned that those 4k satellites is one of the steps on the way to Mars. I have to add to that that sending baby boomers to Mars, right after they retire - will help balance US debt, will lower Social Security expenditures and will decrease C02. And all of that - will be done because of our visionary Elon Mask.

Google has just gave Musk one billion to kick off the project.

Elon actually talked about this during a interview in MIT, I think this guy is very honest and he always does what he says. so I am really not surprised to hear this. Even though this sounds pretty crazy, but I think it's a very logical step for humanity.

Elon Musk has a lot of ideas but limited money, US should give him 100 billion dollars.
