It is almost paradoxical that an object has spent millions or tens of millions of years emitting matter and radiation should, at the end of its life, totally outdo itself and emit perhaps the same amount or even more again. Interesting though it might be to know when a close supernova will occur there won't be too many protective measures we can take if we are in the firing line.
