The two spaces irks me. Thanks for this piece. They still teach it in high schools across the country, and I wasn't sure why. My school always followed the Single-Space Rule. My question to those who follow the DSR is: have you read anything in modern print that has two spaces? Not to say it doesn't exist; however, I'm pretty sure every blog, magazine, newspaper, novel, etc. uses only one space. Why doesn't it look unnatural to these people?

But there's more to it! Typewriters are monospaced and most word processors are proportionally spaced. With monospaced fonts, apparent spacing between letters varies, depending on the character. For example, sentences with m's look more tightly bound than sentences with thin characters, like i's. The extra space between sentences helps to visually distinguish them. This mechanism isn't needed with proportional fonts.

I learned to type in 1990 on a word processor and was taught two spaces. My workplace has issued a "style guide" that is enforcing the use of one space and I just can't do it. I don't like the way it looks and I hate the thought of having to change this for all documents in the future. It is harder to find pieces of information within a document if you are scanning a page full of text because your eyes can't find where the sentences start and finish as easily. I think the idea of taking the extra space away is just another example of how society is becoming more and more lazy.

Funny; I'm old enough that I learned to type on a typewriter (manual, no less), and I never learned to put two spaces after a period. I wonder if I missed that piece of instruction in my learn-to-type book, or was the rule not all that universal, or maybe the instruction was there but I just ignored it. ("Two spaces? Ain't nobody got time for that!")
