Space Shuttle Endeavour Lands in Los Angeles
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Space shuttle Endeavour, perched atop NASA's 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft landed at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) at 12:51 p.m. PDT, ending a cross-country ferry mission and returning to its place of birth, California. Endeavour was NASA's fifth and final space shuttle to be built. Construction began on Sept. 28, 1987 and it rolled out of the assembly plant in Palmdale, Calif. in April 1991. Endeavour will be removed from the SCA using an elaborate set of cranes and wind restraints. It will be placed on a special transportation system and moved into a United Airlines hangar, where it will remain for several weeks while final preparations for its transport and display at the California Science Center are completed.

Research: Ad Astra Rocket Company. Scale model of new engine tested successfully. Booked to go to space station for zero G tests next year, NASA has already committed for full scale engines (pending trials of scale engine on international space station) Easy to Google. There are NASA press releases on this. ATK is already contracted for heavy lift rocket to carry deep space system with third stage to be new "high velocity engines"

this was the peak of humanity. i remember watching these landings and launches as a child an young adult... coming across them again, all I can think is what a loss this project was to every person on earth. who could not delight in the expansion of our ability only restricted by our wonder. I never thought our wonder would be the limit.

To bad you didn't shoot from the elevated part of Imperial Ave. You would have a unobstructed view. But I imagine that area was packed with people.

I love that its on a 747-100 that was built in 1974. Its a living testament to old-fashioned american workmanship and quality.

Hello NASAtelevision. If anyone is reading this from NASA can you please tell me if NASA did filming of all the flyover in Los Angeles.....I'm only seeing parts of this and it would have been fabulous to see the entire roadshow( Pardon the pun). It was fabulous and I'm still talking about it....thank you so much!

this truly is a modern marvel.. putting together this project just to even move the space shuttle on top of another airplane and make it fly co-existently is amazing. this essentially begins one giant plane with 2 sets of wings..

The next step is a new deep space vehicle. A trip to an asteroid and later to Mars is in the works. A prototype crew capsule has already been delivered to the Cape. and a new heavy lift rocket has been contracted for. A revolutionary new deep space propulsion system for the third stage is in testing (Earth to Mars in 39 days!) We will be back in space soon...and we will be doing some seriously cool stuff.

OMG I WAS THERE! And now I'm back in Phoenix. I experienced undoubtedly the worst traffic the LA area has to offer. 4 hours to get from LAX to Riverside! On the way there, traffic was stopped for 2 or 3 hours between Blythe and Indio due to an accident. The mattress at the Motel 6 was saggy and left my knees feeling sore when I woke up. I walked a couple of miles today and stood around waiting from 8am to after 12. A little sunburned (or lightly toasted?). Was it worth it?? HELL YEAH!!!
