Columbia disaster as seen and recorded from my driveway. Space shuttle Columbia breaking up over north Texas on 2-1-03. This video along with my video camera was sent to NASA for analysis. The zoomed in portion of the video at the very beginning has created some controversy over the years. The shuttle appears to be facing the wrong direction exposing the left side to extreme pressure. You can see the heat building up as I zoomed back out and then it began to break up. This is the only video showing the shuttle moments before the break up.

Very sad moment for the astronauts and families. Like one said you caught a piece of history.

i remember feeling the blast of it hitting the ground when I was just a little kid. it shook our entire house and we were miles from it. I'll never forget that moment.

Folks, the first shot is clearly not space shuttle debris, looks more like a ufo craft which is most likely brought the shuttle down in the first place. You can surf the Internet and find this same craft in other videos, just do your homework the truth is out there.

My Manager told us 2 days after the launch that a 3 x 4 ft piece of foam hit the Wing and they were trying EVERYTHING to get pictures of the DAMAGE ... NASA KNEW THEY WERE IN TROUBLE !!!!! And the sad part was that Atlantis was RTF on the pad and NASA decided NOT TO SAVE THE ASTRONAUTS !!! Go ahead and comment all those BS Lies or Foolish Supporters who are Naive to believe Everything they are told...............One of the most Talented group to ever fly together. So Sad NASA was Impotent to save them..... Unforgivable .....

Ufo anomaly at 2.05..auto focus appears to pick out 2 objects to the rear before some projectile shoots forward faster than the reentry speed of the shuttle itself followed by the streamer or flare coming from the shuttle..definitely looks odd ..what's your thoughts dave ? May they're souls rip

Fasinating and sad. Thank you for sharing. The initial glow before smoke starts escaping, do you suspect that's the shuttle on fire because it had entered, or at least appeared to have entered the earths atmosphere. I would guess this is right at the moment it broke up because of the glow followed by the smoke trail.

The shuttle was about 70 miles from the camcorder at the closest approach in this video. The shuttle would span about one or two pixels on the image sensor when zoomed in. The shuttle shape can't be seen in this video. To clearly see shuttle shape, a setup similar what a group of engineers used at Starfire Optical Range in NM is needed, which consisted of an image sensor and a 3.5 inch mirror telescope with an optical magnification of about 200.

This is amazing! In fact you cant see the three main engines, because of the distance and airturbulance?, and the left wing seems intact.
