Space Quest 0 - Part 1: Parser, Save, Gross/Scary and Timed
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Nathaniel plays and talks his way through Space Quest 0: Replicated, a fan-made PC prequel to the Space Quest series of comedic adventure games. Part 1 of 8. In this part, we learn about a planet with a dying sun, warring aliens, and a CLONE ARMY that pretty much mean the entire universe is coming to an end. Then we learn that clueless space janitor Roger Wilco will be the one to save the day, which pretty much means the entire universe is coming to an end. Our hero (by accident, not by choice) emerges from one of his trademark on-the-job broom closet naps to find that one of his fellow crewmen aboard the Xenon (or possibly Labion) Orbital Station 10 has been killed. Roger's investigative instincts immediately kick in, and he proceeds to hide in the closet, where he discovers a crowbar. Following the obligatory sweep of the room, Roger locates a keycard that grants him access to an elevator. He emerges from the elevator to find that ALL of his fellow crewmen have been killed, most likely by a member or members of a rebellion known as R.A.L.P.H. (which is appropriate, given the gruesome, pixelated carnage all over the hallways--blech). Thanks to Roger's corpse-searching aptitude (that's a phrase I hope never to write again), a microchip is found that will restore power to the escape pods, allowing both Roger and a mysterious BLUE ALIEN to flee the space station before I abuse my commentary privileges and make more horrendous Star Trek puns. Our video concludes in a climactic battle between Roger and the escape pod's controls, driven by my total refusal and inability to spend more than three seconds reading the instructions on how to fly the stupid thing. Probability of something exploding: High. Brought to you by GameCola.net.

You know, I've got a lust for nostalgia, pixels, adventure games, sierra - you ever get that feeling? Anyways, after browsing around a bit I just came back to this playlist. This fan game and your goofy narration is the pinnacle of what I'm looking for. Also, I think we should make a game together. Also, I think we should get an apartment together... oh scratch that last part.

I'm confused is this the only prequel or did someone else make one too.
-
I really enjoyed your playthrough! nice work mate!
-
I'm a bit late to the party on this one - just realized this game exists - and my god sir your voice is absoultely perfect for narrating this game! Time for a marathon methinks... Thanks for the entertanment!
-
Yes, Roger Wilco landed a job aboard Xenon Orbital Station 10... But because he's so worthless, he got lost and ended up on Labion Orbital Station 10 instead!
-
yes it does but goo is still good without the d look up key of awesome prometheous vid you will get the joke if u dont already get it btw love your vids do you have your own channel with game plays on it or is it just gamecola

Space Quest is absolutely a great place to start! Zork is also a classic, and purely text; even if you don't get very far, it's worth it just to have the immersion factor of such a rich text parser. Quality control was not present for Deja Vu, but that was part of the fun--as the third guy on GameCola staff to go through a version of the game, I was quite happy to do everything completely wrong for a change.
-
Ah, but that d makes so much of a difference...
-
I'm glad you think so! I can't make any promises about future series; I'd like to do more adventure games, for sure, but we'll see how that goes.

As I was mentioning above to PostApocolyptica, I've had a new microphone for the last few videos I've done, but it's also that I've been editing out most of the background noise when I'm not talking, so that helps, too.
-
Hah! Thanks--glad you're enjoying. I thank my friend for the microphone upgrade he gave me for Christmas last year; I'm really pleased with the audio quality now.

I am not a number. With this crowbar, I am a Freeman. Okay, that was lame, but it was better than my cancelled pun on the Labion Orbital Station (let's not go there). This playthrough is indeed entertaining, and, as JoeReviewer pointed out, your microphone quality is excellent, just like in the Mega Man VS. Ghosts 'n' Goblins playthrough. Very good. The beginning also felt a little bit like Star Wars, but... stranger. :)

Make a full playlist of all the games in gamecola YOU did not the others. i enjoy the other commentaries but i LOVE yours the most!
-
You do read fast indeed. Also, I noticed that I heard no microphone hum thoughout this whole video, which is impressive considering that amounts of times there were long pauses. Have you gotten that new microphone, or enlisted the use of a sound gate? I know that there was a tiny bit of hum in one of your more recent videos (relatively speaking, I want to say it was a MM5 blooper, but it could have been 4 or 6 bloopers as well) It was only defined because you took a distinct pause in that video.
-
I was pleasently surprised you played this. I grew up with these games. Your comical narration would be great in the other Space Quest series. PLEASE PLAY THOSE AND POST!!!!

Goo is good without the d

Well, it looks like the Space Quest series would be a good start for me, but if you have any other ideas, they would be nice too. =) Also, has quality control seen your Deja Vu (PC) run? Plot ignorance abound! XD

Text parsers in general seem to be more difficult to some degree than most point-and-click games, and I can't think of any adventure game with more modern graphics that uses a parser. I can make some suggestions if you'd like, though. The silent pauses are intentional; the original version had commentary throughout the entire video, but Quality Control (my wife) said it distracted from the plot and wasn't as entertaining. So, I'm giving people time to read--trust me, this works better.

Spanish class helped hone that ability (well, the R trilling; not sure about the narrating). I have way too much fun with my announcer voice. :)

That amused me, too.
