Run a 5 man dev squad in my 400pt combat patrol list. List is dev/assault/and tactical unit. one of each. tacs in a rhino or drop, assault with jp's, and devs to light'em up from across the field.plus I use ultras tactics.
-
I keep my 5 man squads cheap at 115pts each. I run with 2, one with 3 ML's and the other with 3 plasma cannons. They have a high threat level as they are always getting picked on first. I might move some points around and add 5 guys each to soak up the wounds.

There was a time in 3rd ed. where a group of 4 Heavy Bolter Devastators always got their points worth of kills. I would like to see them go Assault 3 more like Deathwatch to make up for them becoming increasingly irrelevant in 7th ed.

Potent

I love running classic Space Wolfes, Longfangs with missile launchers and Greyhunters with Bloter, Bolt Pistol, CCW abnd 2 melta in rinos. May not be the most competetive but very fun and robust.

For me I'm putting together a storm lance list, so the devastators have to have a rhino or razorback, so it is four grav cannons in a razorback. They can jump out, fire 12 shots with 3 of them hitting on 2 and jumping back into the transport afterwards. Great for slamming a high armor value unit or wrecking a vehicle with awesome mobility. The rest of my list besides the Stormlance is a first company task force, so theoretically the terminators and Sternguard will be a higher target priority

nice video love the tactics but hate space marines lol

My favourite setup on my devastators is 2 missile launcher and 2 lascannons. It's more versatile than all lascannons, and a bit cheaper. And as Imperial Fist it's much more effective against higher AV targets than all missile launchers.
I personally put them in a Bastion with the ammo store upgrade. It's 20 more points than 5 additional marines and provides a higher point to shoot from. Not to mention the 4 heavy bolters in case someone gets cute with a meltagun/ bomb.
My list is in no way meant to be good just me bringing some of my favourite units together.
2500 points
Space Marines (Combined arms detachment) Imperial Fist
Chapter Master The Shield Eternal; Relic blade; Artificer armour
5x Honour Guard Relic blade; Chapter banner
10x Sternguard Veteran Squad 4x Combi-melta;
Drop pod
5x Terminator Squad Cyclone missile launcher; Chainfist
10x Tactical Squad Melta bombs; Plasmagun
10x Tactical Squad Melta bombs; Plasmagun

What about plas? My group of guys I play most with are SW, BA, Khorne, and possibly tyrannids... What should I run? I know the missile is the go to but what about other ways?
-
My favorite unit is Dev squad with 2 grav cannons in a rhino
-
SW Long Fangs for the win .... or at least it used to be. If you're running Chaos , what about Sound Marines. I always found those things to be so devastating when my friend played them. At least back in 5th ed .... not sure if it's true any more.

Hey fritz if you choose lascannons spam bolter tactical marines don't forget about the krak grenades they have,
missiles are a bit more versatile but require meltaguns/bombs to take out heavy armour
my preference: 3 all missile squads all taking 3 razorbacks with twin lascannons
2 5 man tactical squads in razorbacks with twin lascannons to be support units at the back of the board, put one mid-long range weapon (more missiles) to use razorbacks firepoints
4 tactics squads 10 man all have bolters (no pistols/heavy weapons) plasma is acceptable
then put what ever you find fun with remaining points
I recommend bike spam with HQ on bike no elites at all as they're not cost effective compared to other units,
I think you'd enjoy a bike command squad to get into close combat, as your army is relatively cheap you could probably fit in two with apothecary feel no pain at toughness 5 hide them behind cover and rhinos don't kit them out to heavily 1 or 2 power fists max or melta bombs -
skyhammer annihilation is a great formation for devastors just Do not try it against tau
-
Missiles and Las for me, Plasma in fun games :D
-
I got a squad with 4 rocket launchers which soften up my wall of assault marines
-
Love Devastator! My favorite weapon (beside Gav) missile launchers. I love the fact that I have the option to choose between frag, crack, and the sky fire one. ( I forgot the name)

Lascannons are great if you run allies with divination (like three groups of inquisitorial troops with a psyker in each). Gives a bubble against assault with a bunch of blocking 5 point t3 wounds (w/ bolters). Work very well with missile launchers in 1500 point and under too. They're squishy, but offensively point-efficient.
As an aside, they are also models that can be great in both casual and competitive contingent upon skyhammer and loadout. With magnets, they don't cost a lot and can see many niches filled for less money than buying unique models for each one. -
What do you think about using a Devastator squad with 2 lascannons in a Rhino (min cost 145 pts)?
When the Rhino does not move, the Devastators could use the Rhino as a mini bunker to protect them from small arms fire while firing. It also allows them to reposition themselves faster using the Rhino's 12" + 6" flat-out when they are unable to draw line of sight to important enemy units. -
Imperial Fist lascannon Tank Hunter Devastators. My main source of anti-tank (and anti-MC when push comes to shove)
