Space Invaders on Atari XE Game System
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
The original Atari 8-bit computer version -- totally unlike any other version I've played. Notice the "alien mothership" on the left side, and the lack of shields. Most Atari computer users chose the aftermarket Roklan "Deluxe Invaders" instead, because it was a lot closer to the arcade version. But this version is certainly unique.

If you pause at the right time you'll see that the bottom 2 rows of aliens spell RF (when rotated 90 degrees) The game designer was called Rob Fulop.

It's harder than Battelfield 3 :/

this is the easy game to play ever

I like this game

Had forgotten that sound... yes, quite intense.

Other than the fact that you sound like a Peanuts Christmas special and can't play for shit, it was a cool video! lulz

Wow, so many memories of this version! Best marching sounds, hands down. When you compare this with the 5200 version, you lose the awesome space ship on the side but gain the shields. The 5200 version has lots of cool looking, colorful aliens. Finally, the 5200 version when played with the trackball, actually works in analog mode with this game. So its kinda like playing Centipede without the ability to go up and down. I think the 5200 version might edge out in a contest. I love them both.

Atari 400/800/1200/VCS 5200/XL/XE/XEGS were technically all the same, constructed in 1979.

This was one those rare times when Atari's home computer conversion was inferior to its arcade (or 2600) counterpart. The two big issues here: the redesigned invaders and that they slowly converge onto the playing field via the mothership(?). The latter gives the player a jump start but takes away the challenge in the process. And yes, Roklan's version is the best one to play if you want authenticity.

I don't know. The RF modulator might have a problem, and maybe the composite video output is fine. But for $60 I wouldn't take the risk. For around that price you can find a complete working one on eBay.

i can buy an atari xe for 60 dollars it comes with keyboard and gun and everything..but the owner says its stuck in black and white mode and they dont know how to change it..could you tell me if theres a way to change it to color mode

Better than what? I just like the XE Game System because it was the final model in the Atari 8-bit lineup, and because of its detached-keyboard design. The 130XE has double the memory (128K vs. 64K) and is really the better computer, but I just prefer the XEGS.
