Space Elevator Tower
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Hi all, This is a new video which shows a geosynchronous space tower, partially inspired by the novel by Arthur C. Clarke, Fountains of Paradise. Unfortunately I didn't find any Earth texture resolution higher than what we can see here, 16200x8100 for the first part and 21600x10800 for the second, so too close panoramas to the ground will remain a little blurry. Moreover, this animated video created in Blender 2.63 took about 110 hours of render distributed, not without difficulty over a few weeks, for a total of 11670 frames ! Good viewing and enjoy !

Update!!! Carbon Nano Tubes, man. A structure with a car inside is not possible, but a car that rides the cable externally is. The key is not a tower, but rather a tether form a space station or satellite connected to a floating station in the ocean. Don't believe me? I know, pretty unbelievable. Just research it like I did then take it up with our worlds top astrophysicists if you don't agree.

too bad the elevator would be a direct short across the radiation belts. Awesome fireworks

I want to skydive from orbit. A refractory snowboard for re-entry shield, & hi-temp ceramic cloth for a chute. This elevator is a base jumpers wet dream

I bet it's in Africa starting
-
Where?

Music is my ringtone, my record No one, my alarm clock music, my everything, everything.

That would be one SPECTACULAR ride up! :)
Especially if theres a viewing window in front of you.
Would hate the descent though.... -
It's not impossible, Just too expensive.
Look up Carbon nanotubes. -
Implausible concept but epic video. You have the approval of Dagoth Ur.

Amen!

As I said, space elevator is pure sci-fi concept, so unfeasible at this time without violating the laws of materials physics.

This absolute foolishness! Does anyone remember the NASA experiment where they unreeled a cable behind the Space Shuttle? It burnt in half due to excessive current. What do you think a 22,000 mile long cable will do passing through through space? It will melt or if we would luck out it would supply enough power for the entire planet.

Of course this is a pure science-fiction concept : it involves a materials strength literally inaccessible or unfeasible. Far from it today ! ;-) The trick would be placing the gravity center of the tower on the geosynchronous orbit to avoid movements around the Earth. However, I think one of the least known but most serious risk is the slowing of the Earth rotation by conservation of its angular momentum !

as cool as the notion of a space elevator is, I don't see the feasibility in it. A tower of that scale would sway and probably collapse on itself. As for the elevator itself, if it were to enter the atmosphere at that velocity, it would disintegrate in the atmosphere and kill anyone inside unless it were properly shielded and that's assuming the railings don't fuse together or the tower doesn't fall apart.

now this is the future

As a member of one of the space elevator teams, I appreciate elevator art, especially nice stuff like this! :)

building something like that is my dream I was inspired by ar Tonelico
