"Space Battleship Yamato" was a hugely successful 1970s anime series that spawned a whole host of sequels. (An edited and subbed version was also shown in the West as "Star Blazers".) It was remade in 2012 as "Space Battleship Yamato 2199" and as a live action film "Space Battleship Yamato" in 2010. Got all that? Good :) The 2010 film is quite a bit different from the anime. Clearly it wouldn't be possible to condense the tv series into a 90 minute film so the plot follows the tv series only very generally. The enemy alien race, the "Gamilas" is quite different too. - In the anime they're basically Earth-like humanoids with a similiar culture and quite a bit of the story is taken up with Gamila characters and plot. However, in the 2010 film they're more a mysterious generic enemy race. One nice thing that appears in both the series and the film is the way the space battlefleets/navies are treated very like a surface water navy with space being the sea etc; something I like :) The film's pretty good; it's not brilliant but it's watchable (even if you haven't seen any part of the anime series). I'm a big fan of space battles, so here's the opening battle (in HD) from the movie with the Earth fleet being annihilated. it's not a very long battle (the anime equivalent is much longer) but it's still pretty good. N.B. I (obviously) don't hold the copyright to this film. You can buy it on dvd/Blu-ray easily (under £10) so well worth a look if you're a sf fan.
