Hey, this anime is going to have a sequel and a new distributor to Italy, Germany, France, and America!
Yes, after 4 years this thing will get a official distribution -
I loved this anime, and am planning to rewatch it very soon.

You can currently buy the Japanese DVDs and BDs on Amazon.co.uk, but from various vendors, at various prices; from ~£20 ($26) up to a sickening £130 ($168) for a single volume. Also, the BDs seem to be all region, but the DVDs seem to be region 2 only (Europe and Japan), so be aware of that. The film, Oddessy of the Celestial Arc, seems to be going for ~£65 ($84).

You say its technically illegal to watch it outside Japan. I don't see what you mean. I live in New Zealand and have read and only heard about this show but want to watch it desperately(including the old movies and tv series from the 1970s possibly). Again, you do say its kind of illegal but does that mean I cannot watch it if I buy an import or a rare special edition from ebay???

yes, because when i think "obscure" i think of one of the most well known and beloved anime of all time

Best. Anime. Ever. The end. Buh-bye, Naruto, farewell to One Piece, this is far better. (No offence)

Great review. Thanks! I was a big fan of the original series, and I just ordered the first disc of 2199.

This is a fantastic review. More please!

I liked the fact that the Gamilas-Earth conflict is more nuanced than in the original series, and that there were Gamilas characters that got decent air-time and development.

This is one example where the remake is actually an improvement over the original. The characters are more fleshed out and several changes were made to meet the changing sensibilities of the audience. Much has changed in Japan in 40 years. There are more female characters which assume stronger and more assertive roles in moving the story. The Gamilons are also given more depth as well. They are drawn out to resemble Nazi Germany in much more detail than before. The enemy is the military leadership rather than the whole Gamilon race. And there are races subservient to Gamilon such as the ones in command of the Pluto base.
Excellent visuals and great storytelling make this a gem if you can find it. The Japanese blu-ray discs have English subtitles and will work on North American players but you will pay a lot for it. The whole set of 7 discs I bought in Japan cost about $350. -

oh my god where did you get all these instrumental music?

Nice review. But... Motion Wave Gun?!... Also, "no good, legal way to check out the series"? The japanese Blu-Rays may be a bit more expensive than the unfinished run of Star Blazers 2199 but they come with a nice art booklet, have english subtitles and are region free. So... that's a good way to get the show. Not to mention that way you directly support the production and increase the possibility more episodes will get the remake treatment. I know many fans want to see the second arc - The Comet Empire, or Gatlantis arc - remade.

gogoanime.tv has the show in 720p and HQ sound

Yamato 2199 is a remake of the seminal 1977 TV series, the plot is almost identical to the original, but 2199 expands to plot, developing and expanding the characters, widening the story arc, humanizing many more characters including the enemy, and in general doing a great kick ass job in the offering.
I got mine via Ebay from a Malasian DVD distributor, the DVD is from the Bluray so there is a slight loss of visual quality, in Japanese with good english subtitles, but its still way WAY worth it. GET IT! -
Motion Wave Gun? You have that backwards. . . .

What was that guitar version of the intro theme right at the beginning?@.@

Awesome review! Loved this show! Sci-fi/space odyssey shouldn't miss this!

Omg Yamato Porn. As a kid, I watched some of these, and Force Five in B&W five inch screen I got at a yard sale. Came in okay, considering it was antenna world.
I did see a VHS fan sub of Yamato the first series. It was awesome.
Seeing this remake is enough to make a fan shed a tear! It looks so crispy, even in milk! I am going to dig up more about this. I need some new binge material.
The original was Japan's Star Wars. In terms of box office Sci-Fi. I love what looks like. Respectful to the original, but applied today's production value.
Though as a kid, even the English translated show taught me many things. Honor, friendship, duty, and love.
The animation back then was cutting edge. I know it looks quite dated. However, this series helped implant Anime in America.
Voltron is the show many people think of when you say classic anime. I found it so watered down in message. It almost talked down to me. Star Blazers never did. Shit got real. It was the favorite part of my day.
