About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
This is another theme song also written by Derek Wadsworth. It has certain similarities to the theme song finally chosen.

Barry Gray's work for Season 1 is so immortal and iconic that Wadsworth's contribution is often ignored. Thanks for posting this rarety which shows that he was trying to create the golden mean between the solemn 'epic' sound of Gray's theme and the ultimate uptempo theme which was used for Season 2. I always loved the show, and though, in the intervening years, have come to prefer Season One (my reasons are purely sentimental - and in some instances based on a preference for the stunning production values of Season 1 [sets with ceiliings; Frank Watts' outstanding chiaroscuro cinematography; all that luscious Italian furniture; the creepy, almost defeatist nihilism...]), I often find myself thinking that if, like Wadsworth's theme here, the show had only found the golden mean between the intentions of the two seasons (the reach of Season 1, the slightly more relaxed, character driven energy of Season 2) it may have fared better...maybe not. It was, after all, at the time, the most expensive per episode show being produced (or at least that is what I recall).

My problem is not with any of the scores (including the MANY alternative scores NOT selected). I didn't like the opening titles and visuals for season 2. None of them fit the music.

I'm a big fan of 1999...have every single episode (I think). I like the clean, rock sound (season 2). I like this better. More powerful. Still, state of the art. I don't even know how old this post is. This version (not forgetting that Alpha was blasted out of the Sol System) implies the simple fact of being on your own, fending for yourselves. And we are, indeed, powerful. We will protect our own, hell or high water. This version promotes that...where the original (season #2, clean as it is, doesn't carry over very well as far as Moonbase Alpha is concerned......the ultimate goal now is to survive anything that comes your way. I own 2 Roland Junos , a Proteus, Korg, Ensoniq,. I've laid down some tracks and such. I STILL cannot top this. The bottom line is, it ain't what you play with, it's how you play it! It's a feeling. Not something you can zip or un-zip on a synth of a kb. After all these years, I've wanted the musical geniuses of Derek and Barry to do something fantastical. I needed more. This does it! Thank you ~Bill

Wow, way more dramatic than the version they chose. Less catchy though.

@MsTexas73 You remember better than me! hehe I would of had her turn into Jodie Marsh twins.
-
@MarkySpark001 You mean Tony, yes?
-
Bleah!!! I don't like Space 1999 Season2. It seems USA Tv series like Dallas, Flamingo Road ...

The alternate theme song is on the Season 2 CD released by Fanderson. You have to be a member to order from Fanderson, but you might keep an eye out for it on Ebay.
-
Wow! Where did you get that? Thanks!

Maya and Alan had it goin' on. Wonder what he had her change into at bed time???? The mind boggles

@UFOSPACE1999 since she was now part of the alphen crew maya would of seen videos of earth animals also psychons are human like as well she could also turn into animals she was familliar with ion and outside her home world before it blew up . with the technology the physchons had she and mentor could of space travelled not going to far as mentor being a chief scientist would of wanted to return if the volcanos there became threantening
-
@mikecombs61 well, she could've studied Terran lifeforms... i mean they had to have something to do between insane phenomenon.
-
you are confused about Maya? How could she know what a dog is? Well, gee, here's a concept for you.. I've never seen a Mountain Lion, but I can see them on video and on the internet and in books... If we have a moon base, I am sure they have a book, or video, or two of a dog. Makes ya kind of wonder. haha.

@UFOSPACE1999 There are space cats, space dogs, etc. In Science Fiction, you have to suspend disbelief, like the idea that a giant nuclear blast could nudge the Moon out of orbit & not send large chunks of Lunar rock raining down on Earth. Maya could also read minds, so she could get images of animals & their abilities. This show filled the post - Star Trek gap which Glen Larson attempted to fill with the original Battlestar Galactica in '78 & then with the remake of Buck Rogers.
-
Aw heck, since there are humans all over the universe in these shows, why not assume there are dogs and cats, too. No less impossible!
-
Yeah, I think I do too. It has a more ... epic feel, rather than the fast actiony feel of the chosen score.
-
Well to quote brian blessed in black adder, the second seasons theme tune was as comparable as excrement is to cream. However, I respect that some people like it, I nearly did, but it just took it a bit too far in the...cheese o meter.
