This monster can be used in other Sci-fi movies too. It's like a spider sucking a juice out of victim. Spider web also emirates UV light to lur insects in, as I was reading in an article years ago, same as this to our people in. First victim had a gun didn't even use it. His gun didn't explode inside either. Strange that laser didn't kill it but knife and tomahawk did! The story still is very powerful and scary.

Haven't seen this in 40 years. Scared the hell out of me for days, just like everyone else. The entire episode was very creepy.

This creature terrified me as a child, it stayed with me as a memory ever since, though for years I thought it had been from an episode of Star Trek or Battlestar Gallactica. This is the first time I've seen this monster in over 35 years. And I have to say, I can see now why it got to me so much. The noise it makes is horrific and it's still very effective. On a side note, It was funny seeing that the actor who played Mr Bronson in Grange Hill was the first to get incinerated. Thanks for uploading and allowing me to relive a defining T.V. Moment

Was anyone else triggered with the memory of this scene when they saw the Facehugger vs. Engineer scene in Prometheus?

The one show that chased me behind a couch and haunted me for years. I took it as a mark of courage going through the DVDs as an adult and choosing to watch this episode again at long last.

Admiral Ozzel came out of light-speed too close to the system...

I can't verify this, but I have been told when this episode first came out (1974 or thereabouts), some stations refused to run it because it was too graphic.
At any rate, it's still a great ep that has held up very well. The creature's foam rubber tentacles are admittedly rather dated, but most of the scene is just as fresh and scary as it was then. You see elements that were later used in some very scary films, like Alien and maybe even Hellraiser (the grasping tentacles shooting out of the darkness, etc.) Good stuff. -
this looks ridiculous now but that shit traumatized me as a kid

This scared the crap out of me as a child. Now it looks like Sigmund the Sea Monster on a bad acid trip.

This scared the shit out of me in the seventies.

Well this episode scarred me for life, Freddy Krueger was like a fluffy bunny next to this horror and it was the cause of many a nightmare, thanks...

For the records, what's the name of the episode featuring the robot that tries to join the crew, and ends up crying when they dump it?

A generation of tabletop roleplayers grew up rolling dice and swinging swords after this, when D&D was invented. We've grown up now, but whenever our British roleplayers dans un certain age roll initiative and go in swinging their +3 glaives of cleaving or whatever, it isn't dragons or liches they are fighting, in the back of their heads. It's this.
