Sound of Explosions in Space? part 2
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
In this experiment I set off a small explosive charge in a chamber 30cm from a piece of paper once in air and once in a near vacuum. The results told me a lot about sound in space so I've made it a sequel to the last video which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8MljsHpYRk thanks again to tesla500 for the awesome camera which can be found here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1714585446/chronos-14-high-speed-camera?ref=347vmt&gclid=CMTghY-5_NACFQ5qfgodCQkE1w Help me make videos by donating here: https://www.patreon.com/CodysLab

i love watching your videos cody because you can entertain me and educate me while keeping it simple enough for someone without any real training and in depth knowledge of a certain scientific subject. whether it be moles or geological or even biological (bees). i always look forward to your videos to get entertainmeny but also to learn. thank you for everything you do.

I don't know if anybody mentioned this but the speed of the gas propagation would also explain the increase of pitch in the explosive sound. Faster "wave" or "energy" of particles equals higher sound pitch.
-
Cody can you try a pressurized air horn inside the vacuum chamber together with a small mic or a recorder. I'd like to hear if it'll produce a sound of the horn or the sound of a "wind" caused by the release of pressure, or both..
about the probability of explosion due to less pressure outside the can.. it'll prolly be smarter to "empty" the can (by empty I mean 1 atm inside the can), before you put it inside the vacuum chamber...
or ya know.. improvise with a heavy duty bag with a hole, fit a "squeaker" into the hole, then make a remote squeezer. -
Hey Cody, why didn't you mention that you can estimate the maximum temperature of the explosion by measuring the speed of sound? Since you know what gas molecules you have (their mass) you do have the average impulse, which is proportional to the temperature you have inside the explosion. Please comment if I am wrong.

I like the "noise" the balloon made... And as a thought for a small experiment. Could you put one mol of gas in a balloon and put it in the vacuum chamber, to display the size of it. You could even do different gasses to show the different densities.
-
What about a directed explosion. . like a gun or cannon?. . assuming it had its own oxidizer, would you be able to hear it if it wasn't pointed at you? maybe put a barrier between the blast and paper and test for the delay of the "echo" in your chamber
-
The balloon and the part from 2001 blew my mind much more than I thought it would.
-
can you create a permanent vacume with permanently frozen water in it?
-
Now I'm wondering does the rate of expansion in a vacuum increase when the propellant is increased or is there a 'terminal' rate of expansion.

the sign you have behind you is one of the best i have ever seen

You can go to the NASA web site and HEAR sounds that the planets make in our solar system. Similar to what you are tiring to do. Remember, Sound is just a WAVE carried Threw a Medium to our ears, if you remove the air, then you only hear the sound (Pressure wave) if it enters your ear and vibrates your ear drum, thus the gases would have to enter your ear and do this in space or as you said hit the side of your space ship and vibrate the hull, which vibrates the air and you hear it. Also the sound would be attenuated by the material it travels Threw and the type of air it travels Thur depending on the gas mixture of the atmosphere you are breathing.

I'm honestly curious, like I'm not trying to be a jerk. I just want to know why you use the metric system ?

Hi Cody
Do you have a thermal camera?
Seeing the hot expanding gaz expand woud be cool and show the concept you're explaining I think.
I'll stop saying to people that explosions are silent in space from now on thanks to you. -
can you do the test with a buzzer?
-
can you try to put a little speaker inside the chamber...?
-
So the Death Star exploding would heat the hull of a ship near by, then some shrapnel would hit them... so it would sound like a wet fart?
-
What happened to your left arm??? Hope everything is OK there!

I enjoy watching your videos! Deductive reasoning is definitely a talent you express to its fullest extent! You logical processes by which you base your conclusion on are a great learning tool for any situation! Thank you for this clip and all others that you have posted! Keep them coming!
