Never use plastic to distill-this idiot is adding toxins from the plastic to the water. Plus these do not "purify"-all the crap is still in the water.

don't ever drink distilled water. Distilled water contains no minerals at all, so it will remove them from body with sweat and/or urine, causing serious problems. you may add some little amount of salt (sodium chloride), calcium and magnesia (dolomite stone) to convert distilled water into drinking one or drink juices if you can.

Wouldn't the plastic covering produce toxicity due to the heat?

This is a survival method if you are ever stranded. The "Survival Man" show demonstrates this. Dig out the ground, add water or pee, put a collector in the middle, cover with plastic, put a weight in the center over your collector.
