Sir Martin Rees: Earth in its final century?
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
http://www.ted.com In a taut soliloquy that takes us from the origins of the universe to the last days of a dying sun 6 billion years later, renowned cosmologist Sir Martin Rees explains why the 21st century is a pivotal moment in the history of humanity: the first time in history when we can materially change ourselves and our planet. Stunning imagery of cosmological wonders show us the universe as we know it now. Speaking as "a concerned member of the human race," Rees harkens to the wisdom of Einstein, calling for scientists to act as moral compasses, confronting the coming developments and ensuring our role in "the immense future."

God bless all the beautiful minds out there.

we are doomed thats why I get drunk

4:55 and there it is, the Dark Matter bullshit.
onto the next video -
the world will last for ever , humans won't last very long

read his book very insightful. predictions from the 3o's was fascinating.

Admirable that all these scientists are giving us these subtle warnings over 15 minute presentations, but it's starting to all sound the same. Are they doing this for their own peace-of-mind? He sounded very apologetic of the scientists discovering these lethal technologies. Where is the anger or God forbid some action from this guy's generation?
Maybe it's a sly attempt at saving face before humanity points the finger. Not good enough IMO Just admit that the western obsession with energy, atom smashers and rockets is the reason we're holding the loaded gun at our own head - all supplied by men of the same creed as our hero in this video.
Science is the new untouchable religion. Perhaps it should be on the same level as a minor art - a reductionist simplification of explaining our world. These guys pounding away at their physics and handing the keys of destruction over to our benevolent leaders. We should be razing the engines of destruction to the ground NOW, begging nature to take us back. We're simply holding hands as we spill over the cliff face. -
Very enjoyable to watch, everytime I've watched it.He is an amazing man.

these are the good TED talks not mired by 'political correctness.'

How do we even know we live on Earth?

Only seeing this now, thanks for posting.

Getting sick of the BS dished by these literatis.

Fantastic presentation. Complex content simplified in such a short time.

Stimulating talk by a great scientist of our era.

I don't understand why all of these religious people feel obligated to delay the progress of man kind. While I myself don't follow a religion and neither do many scientifically minded people, that doesn't mean science opposes religion or that religious people are incapable of understanding science. Darwin studied theology for many years before devising the theory of evolution. Gregor Mendel, who any one with a 9th grade education should know founded the field of genetics was an Austrian monk. The first person to develop the Big Bang theory, George lemaïtre was a belgian Monsignor teaching PHYSICS at a catholic university. I am not saying to abjure your faith but please open your minds to knew ideas. And specifically to "bible belt Christians" if you love America don't let it become the worlds scientific and technological back water allow yourself and your children to be educated.

Did he really speak on theory as if it were fact? Evolution is a theory, strange enough most prominent believers or evolution were noted occultist. Which means they acknowledge intelligent spiritual existence. They are on a mission to get you not to acknowledge god. Order from the most random really?

This guy should google Nassim Haramein.

Prove of other lives and universes from the Quran.
And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.(Quran 17:70)
And of his signs is the creation of the heavens and earth and what He has dispersed throughout them of creatures. And He, for gathering them when He wills, is competent.(42:29)
It is Allah who has created seven heavens and of the earth, the like of them. [His] command descends among them so you may know that Allah is over all things competent and that Allah has encompassed all things in knowledge.(65:12)

It's struck me in the past ten or so years that mans' general elementary thought (thus far, we seem not far advanced - we hope for thousands more years without nuclear decimation or blind over use of resources to environment-breakdown) cannot grasp infinity. Even astronomers like our friend in this video, cosmologists, physicists, cannot comfortably understand that there is no beginning or end to 'time', that there is no beginning or end to 'cubic area'. Thus a host star, fostering a Goldilocks zone planet aging for 10 billion years, say, in an aftermath of (if the theory of big bang is even partially accurate), is of no chemilurgic significance, we are just a chemical reaction, an electro glazing for a nanomoment - we don't mean anything. we are just we, a fizz, a eyeblink effervescence. of no meaning or purport, in dimensional existence meaning nothing, in a soup of infinite matter, and infinite empty cubic area sharing, too, no 'all', as that word connotes a beginning and and end.
we are the finite ones - in a cradle and bath of infinity.
