Thanks to all the folks at the Institute for Computational Cosmology! You can find out more here: http://icc.dur.ac.uk/Eagle/ or in their Reddit AMA here: https://www.reddit.com/r/science/comments/2sifgc/science_ama_series_we_are_cosmologists_working_on/ I'm at http://tomscott.com and http://twitter.com/tomscott

God is amazing!
-
What if our universe is a simulation like this one?
-
So....what happens if they've made the simulation and a race of intelligent life forms evolves inside this universe?
-
So simulating the universe would take me 3 years with the computational power of my rendering server.
-
But can it run Minecraft on ultra?
-
It's called openCL and my r9 380x has 2048 cores, while running at 1.02GHz and it's dedicated witch means no os or anything to slow it down, and i can use up to four of these witch gets me 8186 cores with 16 Gigs of GDDR5 ram, and with OC'd pentium g3258 running at 4.7Ghz i have enough command rate to feed all four in real time, and 128 Gigs of ddr3 witch can hold all the intermediate data, witch makes my setup good enough to run your simulation at similar speed, except i'd had to rewrite it into kernels for openCL and I'd had to get some intel SSDs to get more speed for accessing saved states, and retrospectively validate results, since for better result I'll need to either use decimal, or a so called "composite double double" :D
.
This might be a good challenge. -
I can run Space Engine on my Computer on highest settings....does that count?
-
How many Crysis barrels is that?
-
bit to much power for a screen saver?
-
I need one for gaming purposes
-
They stopped the simulation one day before it would have come up with 42
-
If we had a computer strong enough and we put in a lot of code, could we eventually be simulating our future?
-
problem with this simulated universe thing is to simulate something to the extentthat we can observe it would take more atoms than what youre simulating so to simulate an entire universe to the very atom you need a computer with a much greater amount of atoms and density than the universe itself and even that might not be perfect although it would be real time simulations
-
What soft do they use?
-
Specs?

"Let the gravity do the magic"... but sir there is no "gravity" in open space? Sooo apparently your experiment is totally wrong. START AGAIN :)
-
Who is Barry Young and what does he have to do with the early universe? 😛
-
The cluster uses around 2000 SL2500 Servers made by Hewlett Packard. There's not a lot of these around and Durham has over 2000 of them. They are all controlled by the IBM which then sends commands to the individual nodes.

And yet, it still can't play Crisis...

each particle is the size of a million suns? get back to me when each particle is the size of a grain of sand. you know I typed that out, and I realized I don't know if I would find that any more impressive, cosmology isn't in my pervue so I don't hear much except giant giant numbers.
