Are Dyson Sphere's possible? Are they practical? What other alternatives to futuristic energy capture do we have to choose from? Why not a kugelblitz - a swarm of black hole powered engines? got a lot of trees to punch before I can unlock that achievement.
-
Seems like they are overlooking things like inter-planetary attraction aka gravity. If you exploit whole planets what happens to planetary orbits?
-
yea and me banging Scarlett Johanssen might happen too.

It occurred to me how often in 'Star Trek: The Next Generation,' the crew of the Enterprise come across something that should be a huge deal to the rest of the galaxy. The Dyson Sphere in the season sixth episode 'Relics' should have led to a massive interstellar conflict of some sort. Even by the standards of the technology from the fictional 24th century in the show, a complete Dyson Sphere would be insanely advanced. Sadly, the show writers never followed up on it.

I thought we were cannibalizing mercury..? Not mars... i dont know. Great video as always!
-
How much would it cost to make a kugelblitz or initiate the first couple of steps in that direction?
-
love the animations

I'm a Physics undergraduate and when I find courses too easy I come and watch PBS Space Time to keep it on the ground.
-
We should first figure out how to store that energy
-
So are you saying the 'Dyson Sphere ' would be a bigger Job than the Panama Canal & Bostons Union Welfare Program , the "Big Dig" ? STFU !
-
this sounds like a sandbox space video game tech tree progression wtf
-
We are currently around 0.76 on the Kardashev scale

PBS you guys gotta get rid of the geico caveman.... he's killing me and looks like he doesn't understand a sound he has coming from his mouth...

Our star would make a poor choice for a Dyson swarm. Most of the galaxy is made of much smaller but long lived red dwarf star. Sol will only last as is for a few more billion years, Red dwarf stars have lifespans of Trillions of years. Impressive when the universe is only about 14 billion years old.

Wouldn't a completed Dyson swarm kill the earth by blocking its required sunlight?
-
I would guess the resources needed to make a Dyson swarm would be way more valuable than the energy produced. In other words, we would need the raw materials way more than we would need the energy.
-
Sure blocking all the Radiation that heats our planet and feeds our plants and animal and ultimatly Humans aswell sounds like a great idea. Also, Cannibalsing other Planets in our System would destabilize it totally .
-
Don't make Dyson anythings. Remember the problem that we're having with space around Earth? There's too much crap in orbit. Don't make a Dyson swarm, don't make a Dyson sphere. It is not worth the risks that expand far farther than this.
-
In the short term we could target covering the surface of Mercury & Venus to trap all solar energy falling on them, but how do we send that energy back to the Earth?
-
you might live to see it but would you really want to, think about it EARTH WOULD FREEZE, THE PLANETS WE'V KNOWN EVER SINS WE'V LOOKED UP WOULD BE GONE INCLUDING OUR OWN MOON, AND HARVESTING OUR SOLAR SYSTEM MIGHT THROW OFF OUR ROTATION AROUND THE SUN WHICH WOULD CAUSE ALL KINDS OF PROBLEMS, AND IF WE DON'T GET THE LIGHT WE NEED EVER ONE WOULD BE ALMOST COMPLETELY RELIANT ON VITAMIN-D SUPPLEMENTS WHICH WOULD CAUSE LOTS OF ECONOMIC PROBLEMS!!!! unless we simply built it in a far away and less valuable system XD. ho and two more things a swarm would be too unstable because of all the things there like debris, storms, and flairs if you agree with me like this comment and if you agree or disagree with me tell me why with a reply :) AAALLSOOOO!!!!!!!!! this is a pretty long comment isn't it LOL
