Why our closeness to the sun does not dictate the seasons. Created by Sal Khan. But the Sun is tiny compared to the solar system which is tiny compared to the distance to the next star. Oh, did we mention that there are over 100 billion stars in our galaxy (which is about 100,000 light years in diameter) which is one of hundreds of billions of galaxies in just the observable universe (which might be infinite for all we know). Don't feel small. We find it liberating. Your everyday human stresses are nothing compared to this enormity that we are a part of. Enjoy the fact that we get to be part of this vastness! About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content. For free. For everyone. Forever. #YouCanLearnAnything Subscribe to Khan Academy’s Cosmology & Astronomy channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChNPnEkW8LYZ5Rwi8_A2-DA?sub_confirmation=1 Subscribe to Khan Academy: https://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=khanacademy

which software does he use to draw

nice, but the video would be so much better if you curbed your passion for repeating words, repeating words,in particular, in particular and in particular throughout the entire, entire video, video, video...
-
interesting video, so from now on I can tell people the Earths orbit is in the aphelion which is when the planet is furtherest away from the Sun but, due to Earths tilt, it is our summer and the Southern hemispheres winter. That should shut them all up from talking shit about television and boring me.

3:00... he drew a pokeball

i have learned alot of great stuff from khan academy, but i was STUNNED!!! again i was STUNNED that 90% of people do not know this...

In the thumbnail for this video I see the Enterprise taking on the Death Star. Tell me I'm wrong.

We just give name to four months that have similar weather.

Stop lying, Khan. Stop lying. Ell oh ell, next you're gonna tell us Pluto isn't a planet, and Spam isn't real meat.

@wonderpopeThat is a good question indeed. The angle is the main argument for the seasons (and thus the heath) but the proximity definately plays a role. Here is my attempt: The difference in distance between perihelium and aphelium is about 5M km(average distance is about 150M km). So that is a relative change of 3.33.. percent (thats not much).Conservation of energy on a sphere surrounding the sun gives us that P2 = P1 *(0.97)^2 = 0.94*P1 with P being the power.I guess it doesn't matter much.

@TrevM I must say there's not a lot wiggle room
-
@angelwings1086 yup the Earth rotational axis makes an angle with the plain defined by the the sun and the orbit of the earth (this plain is called the ecliptica plain). So indeed this angle is the main cause for seasons ;)

@TrevM Thanks

@cosmosgato wikipedia habitable zone

Question: So how far could we get from the sun and continue to maintain life as we know it on earth?
-
But a question remains for me: Is summer in the southern hemisphere stronger due to the closeness compared to the northern hemisphere?
-
Interesting, thanks!
-
@lolkiwi There are combinations & permutations videos in the probability / statistics playlist. Some generating functions / recursive relations would be sweet though =]
-
But what does it mean?!
-
Learned this in earth science last year, makes me feel SMART!

Will you ever do Discrete Mathematic Khan? I am so glad I found you..<3
