About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Sean Carroll is a senior research associate in the Department of Physics at the California Institute of Technology. He is a theoretical cosmologist specializing in dark energy and general relativity. He has been a contributor to the physics blog Cosmic Variance, and has published in scientific journals and magazines such as Nature, Seed, Sky & Telescope, and New Scientist. Sean is also the author of From Eternity to Here: The Quest for the Ultimate Theory of Time, and The Particle at the End of the Universe: How the Hunt for the Higgs Boson Leads Us to the Edge of a New World. Fantastic conversation, I love how Sean makes this stuff understandable and interesting and I love how nothing is set in stone, awesome.

Sean Carroll must usually be the smartest person in the room... yet somehow, he's so convivial that he never makes anyone feel dumb. Not the slightest hint of frustration or impatience having to explain things that for him are obvious. Just makes him that much more likeable.

"From Eternity to Here" is one of my favourite books, together with "The Beginning of Infinity" by David Deutsch!
I'll try to find the new one by Sean Carroll. -
The mere fact that we exist shows that quantum field theory is consistent with our existence.
Therefore one cannot exclude the possibility of repeated existences ("afterlifes") based on quantum field theoretic arguments.
Furthermore, for all we know quantum field theory is an effective theory (or a mathematical model if you will) and we don't even know what life is, so there is no point in arguing here.
As far as I am aware, QFT sais nothing about life so far (I have never come across a quantum field theory biology book), so how can it say anything about an afterlife ? -
Sean Carroll always interesting - always makes complex stuff accessible to mere mortals (like me!)

Interviewer is kinda terrible
-
Don't think carroll wants to talk about WLC, fun to hear him talk about it tho
-
Awesome
-
Holy shit! How did I miss this!!!
-
You might want to mention that this video is more than a couple years old, guys :P

This was an interesting show!

Any plans on another "Moving Naturalism Forward" conference in the future?
-
Excuse me can u please ask my question ?
-
The reason there is something rather than nothing is because there is no such thing as nothing. (philosophical nothing) t/f maybe?
-
Question: Through my Islamic teaching, i was taught that destinies are defined and written in a book before life (the universe) begun. Knowing that, in the mutli-verse theory, everything is possible... How can one refute the claim; that Allah has willed the actions in the past, present and the future? Is the "will", every possible action/outcome ? (I can't phrase a well thought out question as an ex-muslim still residing in Saudi Arabia).
-
Question for Dr. Carroll: Quantum mechanics is so counterintuitive do you think that there must be some more elegant and simpler description of the world?
-
Popular-level explanations of general relativity usually resort to a bad analogy with a large ball on a trampoline that curves the surface, causing a marble to move closer to the large ball. But the marble moves because of the earth's gravitational field. How does gravity really work in GR?
-
Ask Sean if there is any compelling scientific evidence that the B-Theory of time is correct, as opposed to the A-theory of time.
