This version of the song really makes me feel warm inside. I think it should be taught, children can memorize the lyrics and research the meaning later.
A little song that enshrines the triumph of science over superstition. -
I wonder how would...the teacher and other students react if a little kid were to sing this song in class. Gonna be interesting...

Hi Alyssa, my name is Julia Kregenow. I was the one who wrote these lyrics in 2011, with help from my husband Jason Wright. A few months ago somebody brought the 2014 "Astronomically Correct Twinkle Twinkle" by Zach Weinersmith to my attention. The answer is no, Zach and I did not collaborate. Jason and I were originally inspired back in the early 2000s when we lived in Oakland CA by a bus shelter ad by the Girl Scouts of America. The poster had a scientifically-oriented set of lyrics to the song, but the science was not quite right. Being PhD students in Astrophysics, Jason and I took notice. We grumbled that we could do better, but never got around to it.... Until 2010, when we had a newborn at home. With the many hours of tedium that caring for an infant affords, we finally had time to take a crack at it.
A quick google search shows that many astronomers (probably mostly parents!) have undertaken similar efforts independently. Also not a surprise that they end up sounding somewhat similar -- there are a limited number of rhymes with "star", and few fit naturally with the topic.
p.s. I added some new verses to my song in July 2015. I'm up to 20! You can see the latest list here, if you're interested:

This is great, but so similar to the "astronomically correct twinkle twinkle," did you guys collaborate or is that a coincidence? I see yours was posted more than a year before the other one.
