RV Solar Power System
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
Here is the solar charging system I made for my RV which will be parked for the season at the lake: Three 12V 75Ah AGM batteries in parallel for a total Reserve Capacity of 225 Ah in plastic box with cover - $ 1000 One 135W 12V Solar Panel with 30' of 10 AWG PV wire - $ 200 Morningstar SunSaver 20A PWM Solar Charge Controller - $ 120 Two LED Volt and Ammeters with 100A Shunts to measure load and solar supply. Bought from eBay - cheap $ 30 for both including shipping from China! Breaker panel - $ 100 125A fuse and holder - $ 75 2 AWG welding cable - $ 200 1000 Watt Pure Sine Wave inverter $ 150 Total project price = $ 2000 Future upgrades: Another 135W panel I thought of getting a Trimetric 2025RV meter, but instead I think I will build my own with a Raspberry Pi and a A/D converter connected to the shunts. I would like to build a fuel guage showing how many Amp-Hours used and put back in from the batteries since it was last fully charged. I plan on uploading the data analytics up through 3G connection so I can access from my iPhone.

I just added a link to the schematic design for those that want to see how I wired this up.

Would really like to see how you wired these battery monitors up. I'm about to install exactly the same monitor to my boats small solar system but am struggling to figure how the device is wired.
-
What Paul....? I can't hear you the wind is blowing
-
cooking pizza with solar electricity is not practical on small systems neither is air conditioning..that could be done easy with gas or wood (cooking and heating that is)...no need to put batteries, inverter etc thru that. specially on a 12v system
-
Waaaaay too much outside noise and wind on the mike. Other than that, good video.
-
Sounds like you need a wind turbine too, lol.
-
Too much noise to understand your system
-
cool, learned some stuff. thanks.
-
sounds like you'd be better off with a wind turbine lol
-
Difficulty hearing you because of the wind
-
like your video
-
You dont have a charge controller. .u need one so u don't over charge the batterys..my friend. ...

+Paul La Rocque Hey buddy. I can NOT find a good wiring diagram for the meters. Could you share how yours is wired for the battery and the solar panel please. Thank you in advance.
-
This was probably a good video. Too bad you hadn't covered the mike so you didn't get all the wind noise blocking out your voice. Very annoying.
-
Nice review of your system, Looks like you did a fine job designing and building it.
I am working on mine now..
Jet noise didn't bother me, I used to live on base housing on many Air Force Bases, We used to call it "The Sound of Freedom" An F4 taking off using Afterburner on a cold damp morning would loosen your fillings... -
Dido on the noise. Please redo with a little more indepth explanation. Thanks so much.
-
How long did the inverter last
-
Pretty cool check out my small solar setup on my channel thanks
-
Sorry, completely useless with that much background noise.... couldn't watch..
-
could you redo the video without all the wind noise and jets flying over. I liked the info just couldn't understand what you were saying
