Renewable Apartment - How I installed a Solar Panel in my bedroom window
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
It is unusual to install a solar panel in a window. It is not the most ideal location but if you are limited on options then this may be the way to go. Keep in mind that you may not get the full output of the rate of the panel. Seek a qualified electrician if you are unsure what you are doing. Also make sure you are allowed to install this in your building if you do not own it. I will not be responsible if you break your windows, hurt or kill yourself or someone else in the process. Never leave an open window untended. Music: http://www.purple-planet.com

I just want to be able to charge a laptop off of the sun (or a phone)

this is awesome.. just watching this video I am now convince that solar power is amazing.. great job..

I've read that having glass in front of the solar panel reduces its output by as much as 50%. Is this true? Couldn't you have mounted it in the frame with the window open?

I'm thinking about doing this at my place but can you please inform us what are the main uses and benefits in real world use for these, especially for apartment dwellers please? I'm talking about typical everyday use and how it really saves you money. That sort of thing. I know the initial cost are a lot but everywhere I looked they just talk about how they installed and which hardware they used. Didn't even mention how it's working for them personally and financially.

It's a great idea, but quite ugly and it's blocking so much of your sunlight coming through the window. Could you somehow put it outside the window? A balcony is ideal for apartment dwellers I think. Also, if you're gonna do this, I recommend flexible panels, like Renogy's - they are 5% more efficient too so they take up less space for 100 W and they are very thin, so you can easily just tape it to the window or just rest it against it, and you can remove it easily when you don't wait there - kind of a more mobile/plug and play option.

Great video thanks! How efficient is the panel behind the window? Is there a lot of energy loss?
