Was wondering why that Half Life game was titled Blueshift

So if I catch a photon from a star moving towards me, the photon has more energy (higher frequency, shorter wavelength) than if I catch a photon from the same star moving away from me. How does the star know to send different energies in different directions? And if the star would send only photons with the same energy, where goes the difference?

This is fasle. Cosmological red shift is due to the expansion of space. all the objects we see in the universe that are far far away are essentially sitting still. The fact that they are not moving means that they cannot be causing a doppler shift.

Thanks rly helpful

nice, many thanks!

I dont give a fuck about this so called BIG BANG! On WIKI you can found star Sirius is moving closer to us in next 60000 years. After 60000 years, distance between our solar system and Sirius will began to increase. My question is, by which method astronomers figure that out that after 60000 years, distance between our Solar system and Sirius will increase? That must be derived from gay rainbow shift.
How about that might ? Sorry for my Aussie accent, i just wanted to say mate instead might. -
Now i understand!!! Awesome!!

Nice

There are several of these "explanations" on youtube. I am still mystified as to WHY the waves are shorter when coming at me, and longer when moving away from me. I don't feel like it's been explained to me yet. Have I missed something?

Hi!! I thought red shift and Doppler effect were different things, since the expansion of the universe accounts for receding (which give rise to Doppler effect) and also, after the light is emitted, as the universe expands, it has to travel a bigger distance until reaching us, giving then another shift which is the one I thought was the so called red-shift...

So... how do they know what color should the star be emitting to conclude that it's shifted to the red?
-
Finally understandable!!

Thank you

I have an exam today, and this video probably just saved me about an hour of going through notes cuz I just didn't understand how the doppler effect and the expansion of the universe were connected.
Thankyou so much. -
what crap.

thank you

This was so helpful! Thankyou

Question: If the galaxies motion is detected by radio telescopes receiving radio frequency then how would they demodulate the radio frequency to see the video of stars? do they just watch redshited or red waves. Well, red waves are everywhere, i guess, that radio telescope is fake.
