RARE! Space shuttle Columbia Explosion footage
About | Information | History | Online | Facts | Discovery
On February 1st, 2003, the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated during its re-entry into the atmosphere. The seven astronauts were killed. 82 seconds after the launch of shuttle (STS-107), a sizable piece of foam struck the leading edge of Columbia's left wing, at a speed between 650 and 950 km/h, making a hole in the protective tiles made of reinforced carbon-carbon (RCC), close to the landing gear area. During the re-entry into the atmosphere, plasma at 1500 °C penetrated through this hole in the left wing protective shield, and progressively destroyed the inner part of the wing. The crew lost the control of the shuttle. A few second later, the vehicle disintegrated

So "rare" I've seen it on TV a hundred times.
-
the tragic thing is that flight control knew that the Columbia would not survive re-entry but chose not to tell the astronauts, they were pretty much doomed from take off, once they found out the left wing was damaged on take-off it was a case of: 1. tell the crew the situation and leave them in orbit until their oxygen ran out - waiting to die...or 2. don't tell the crew, let them have a happy mission and die unexpectedly on re-entry to the earth. a truly terrible situation for everybody all around, just hope it was quick for them, hopefully passing out due to depressurisation before the crew module broke up. rip.

You must not forget that these people who were on the shuttle knew their chances.
The public did not. The public lost how dangerous this business is.
These are the luckiest people in the world to have a voyage like this, even if they knew they were not coming back.
The saddest thing I can compare to is a passenger aircraft crash. This is worse than any space craft failure . These are innocent people.
Space Travel is so dangerous and the public forgot.
If I could , I would go up tomorrow on the shuttle or any craft knowing that I may die. -
trash

I have a rememberance coin of the columbia shuttle

so the 7 astronauts just vanished completely? not a bone or any body part were ever found?
-
May all seven of them rest in Heaven.

WORST tragedy in space shuttle history. REST IN PEACE FRIENDS.
-
it makes me so angry when astronauts give their lives for space travel and then there are people who think that space travel is all a hoax
-
this footage might be of another object re-entering and breaking up coz there is some compelling footage of the wreck still in orbit. utube search this!! NASA WTF Did You Do To Piss Off E.T - STS107 I Want ANSWERS On This One 11-21-2013

Trust, they suffered. I listened very carefully to the audio. They told mission control metal was being seen. They exlaimed shit. The commander said Roger but ah, we're really SUFFERING. One of the females says more than once, "Think of US".

I was friends with someone who worked on the Challenger Astronauts after the crash in the morgue. Im sure the guy has died now of old age so I can share this. He told me the astronauts didn't die from fire and they were alive until they hit the water. That was a sad one also.
