Watch as the Quran floats into space attached to a weather balloon and strapped with a GoPro during our effort to help unify humanity. If you are interested in learning more about this mission please visit: http://www.quraninspace.com. Why did we do this? One night, as Our Dad was sitting in his hospital bed, we began to talk about Space. It was a topic that we would frequently touch on in his chemotherapy treatments, as it excited and uplifted all of us. Our Dad was interested in all things associated with space, but on that particular night we were specifically discussing satellites. The thought that these manmade objects might float around our planet or universe for centuries was intriguing to all of us that happened to be there that night. "What would you send into space, Dad?" our sister asked. "I would send the Quran." That was Our Dad: Always thinking of the big picture. Despite losing his wife to cancer earlier that year, despite burying his brother a year before that, Our Dad's first thought was the state of this religion he had come to love so dearly during his brief time on Earth. Our Dad died in 2014, a time when the name of Islam was being used to promote violence in many corners of the world. This was not the Islam that my Dad subscribed to, and it saddened him to see the depths of darkness that could be perpetrated in it's name. For Our Dad, Islam was a source of love and togetherness with his community and family. Being one of the first Muslims in Fort Myers, FL, Islam turned a small community of immigrants into a tight knit family. We counted the many different races that would come to our small mosque not as friends, but as relatives. Growing up our Uncles were black and white, yellow and brown. After school our Aunties would cook us Afghani rice, Malaysian Curry, or Macaroni and cheese with the deepest of soul. We were taught to be upstanding members of the community, and to represent our religion with excellent character and even better grades. Today, our sunday school classmates are doctors and lawyers, actors and policeman. Rather than closing themselves off from other immigrant commmunites, we embraced them. Our extended family included Christians and Hindus, Jews and Buddhists. This was the Islam that he knew: a religion of Love meant to interact with the diversity of mankind rather than separate itself from it. After he suggested the idea, I asked him "Why would you send the Quran into Space, Dad?" "Because it would uplift the Ummah (all Muslims) and all human beings" We hope that whether you watch this video as a Muslim or not, that you feel uplifted to know that there are other Muslims out there who promote love of all mankind.
